Ok i got on the fourms today and did my daily reading and stumbled across a thread talking about AMD is gonna come out with a couple new cpus.

Then i read about the AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition!!!!
This fits perfect for what i was looking for in a CPU. I wanted to be able to mess with unlocking of a cpu and be able to OC it to at least 4.0ghz! Well the stock clock on this cpu is suppose to be 3.5ghz. So i think 4.0ghz should be easy to hit.

Well if this cpu does come out on September 21 this works out perfectly for when im gonna buy all my parts.

Ive been looking at 2 MOBOs. But open to other options. But it must have unlocking function.

Here is the 2 i was looking at. Which would you choose and why?

I am leaning toward the MSI now because i read some reviews and the asus has heat problems.
But like i said im open to other options. I would like the board to be some what future proof.

The future proof is gonna be tough right now because AMDs next CPU codename bulldozer is supposed to arrive early next year. It is rumored to be AM3, but no one knows for sure yet.

The asus is a nice board, albeit overpriced unless you plan on going sub-zero and really overclocking it. I dunno jack about the MSI. Gigabyte makes a good one, the UD5...heard good things about it. I of course went a different route (see sig) and couldn't be happier, same goes for my wallet. :D

if the unlocking is anything like it has been with the phenom dual cores then it is gonna be a rare thing that these unlock stable so dont buy one of these and act like you know its gonna unlock. it might not. and if its like the 965 which is stock at 3.4 ghz so 3.5 isnt really much more heat especially since its probably no raise in vcore.
i would get the asus rather than the msi
i would get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128441

I would still like to try and unlock the cpu. I might get lucky.
Can you unlock just one core? Say 1 of the 2 is good.

I really like the MSI i read about it here http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2515. It seem to be all i ever want also it looks wicked.
But the features is what im really after. It just seems to be the board for me.

Does anyone here have this board or a MSI board? How do they perform in the Overclocking area?

MSI boards have always had very WEAK PWM, and their bios department sucks. MSI will give you more headaches than you can ever imagine. Avoid them like the plague they are.

Biostar is cheap and you get what you pay for.

Asus and Gigabyte are about your only other options. I have had good luck with both companies and it basically comes down to price and board layout. IMO Giga's UD5 takes the cake with that one.

the 555 and 550 phenoms could be unlocked by core like my 550 can unlock to a tri core and is stable but as a quad it fails.
yeah i cant remember who it was but it was someone on the forums but i was watching there live benching stream not to long ago with a similar msi board and it took them forever to figure out the bios. go biostar, gig, asus you cant go wrong with those three.
sorry if i sounded like i was bashing the 970. i think its gonna be a amazing cpu that first post kinda came out wrong haha

To be honest, I wouldn't start worrying about a board for a cpu that isn't even out yet. If you want a list of boards that have the capability of unlocking cpu's then that's a place to start.

Edit: you can actually click the green link in my signature, scroll to the "Core unlocking" section and click the Xtreme Systems link for more info.

I found the one im gonna get the BIOSTAR TA890FXE. It holds some world record its cheap and it has the core unlocking feature.

Thanks all for the help. Now i need to chose what ram with work the best.
