allright it's time for a long overdue build! all of the parts are selected with a few choices for different items

and thank you, all you hardware junkies out there, nothing like the thrill of the build! I appreciate any and all comments

the old system is pushing about 8yrs old and the plan was to future proof it, it was
AMD Athlon XP 2000 1.6Ghz
2Gb Cas 2.5 DDR333
ATI Radeon Allin1 9800
350w Allied PSU
Assorted this and that
(but I had a capacitor blow on the motherboard and can only run it at 1.25Ghz, and it shuts off at 80% load)

For the new one the plan is also to futureproof a bit, my budget is $850
it purpose will be mid level gaming machine,, surfing sites with web 2.0 junk, occasional video and photo editing. and of course sitting there looking cool

did find one thing that confused me though, on this page

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom II X4 945 - HDX945WFK4DGM (HDX945WFGMBOX).html

it states that "The fastest supported memory is DDR2-1066 and DDR3-1333"
now that don't seem right, will I not be able to use the 1600? or will it take some tweaking to get all the bus's, volts, and timings right? there is a future OC when it's time to do it and move to 2000mhz ram which the board states it supports with overclock

so do I have to really be concerned about this or is this just a non-issue?

also wondering about the cpu fan/ram/case wiggle room, the size of the cooler doesn't look like its a monster but with both fans I'm wondering if it wont bump the ram when all 4 slots are filled

price ranges from $805 low end to $845 high end

there is of course the worthless rebates and some ok promo codes to apply

once I recover financially from these purchases I will be looking into a nice 26' lcd at arounf $200

so what do you think? still would need to eventually pick up a sata cd/dvd burner and some kinda of decent kb and mouse. but for now the money nneds to go to core componants

again any comments appreciated and thanks ahead of time!

the ram will work fine but i would go to a 955 only like 10 bucks more if i remember right (on my phone so cant get the specifics)
ditch the ocz psu get the corsair 450w i think that will be better get the cheaper ram it will do fine for this build :p
(raidmax is a do not buy brand i believe)
and definitely go with the 5770 its a amazing card for the price
and the cpu cooler is a little fella dont worry about that i think youl need some thermal compound though(idk maybe the cooler comes with it sorry on phone haha)
besides that it looks good

hey thanks for your reply, couldn't find the 955 for $150 but did find it for $160 but I like the idea of going for the black edition, it opens up a much better overclock later

you suggest only 450W, it would work for now but I worry that after more drives and and fans I might be bumping the edge and start to have trouble as the PSU ages, iwas questioning the raidmax, will check out some corsairs

thanks again

this should help on the psu http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=458204

Chiizu, :welcome: to OCers forums. When you look at your parts, Be sure to check the combo deals option with purchases at Newegg, Usually the 955BE processor has many combo deal options, You may knock off enough with a motherboard or video card combo to pay for the processor upgrade.
You do want to avoid Raidmax power supplies like the plague, Prune already linked you to a great part of the forums that should give you good info on your PSU purchase.
As far as the Arctic cooler heatsink you picked out, Honestly I would go another route, I have that exact cooler, It does a solid job on my dual core, However it does hold me back from really pushing my O.C.er on my processor, I believe a quad core would likely overwhelm it if you want to push for any decent overclock. In the same price range you can find the Sunbeam core contact cooler, Much better option for cooling your Quad on a budget IMO.

hey thanks for your post

that sunbeam looks awesome I am definitely going with it, I'll have to see what I can find for a mobo combo on the 955BE

my effort to "future proof" the thing is what pushed me in the direction of getting a PSU with 2 +12 rails, I'd get more amperage over all to support additional devices and when a raid array gets set up. I'm concerned about the higher power draw, at the end of first year I'll find a happy OC for it and reinstall OS. though the board does come with something called core unlocker and turboV evo, so if I find a 6 core that has 2 locked I can upgrade on the cheap, and the autotune OC will get me enough boost in the beginning to feel nice, I'll save the hard OC, when I really need it. it really is a good board and I would hate to pass up the sata 6 and usb 3 for the price it is. if you know of maybe a gigabite board that offers sata6, usb3, 2 PCIE2.0, and native 1600mhz DD3 support, and AM3 140w support, @ 1 cnote ,then I can look for a combo deal (yes, I am in love with this board  )

that corsair is looking nicer and nicer with all the amps it has, how are they on thier rebates though (has a $20 rebate)

how about?

eh? maybe?

neither of those companies are on the list of bad guys, though the Xion was rated poorly

and the only combo for the 955BE at newegg, just has some software and some other ram OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (7-7-7-24) making it $18 than what I planned

EDIT sorry just found Apevia is part of As(s)pire, well that's out.. psu's are alwasy the hardest to pick so hard to throw all the money at it

both those brands are on my no buy list haha
stick with antec or corsair the psu is something you definitely do not want to skimp out on it can ruin the whole system

heard that I know it well, sorry about the post post edit, and ya I had a power supply blow in a system and melt one of the 20pn plastic connectors into the power connector on the board, I saved the board after chipping out all the plastic and re-sadering (sp?) the connector on, ithink I will go with the corsair and hope they honor the rebate

ok so I am pretty sure I have the final build

811.25 after rebates

I never rely on rebates, not one has ever come through for me, I still try, but I'd be surprised if I got one even after curing the sick and blind, walking on water, and sending in the UPC code...haha

so really $846

I'd love to have the 955BE, but when the price goes down I'll get a 12 core!..or one day a 1000 core processor

Sunbeam CR-CCTF

http://www.sunbeamtech.com/PRODUCTS/cooler/Core-ContactFreezer.html

Compatibility Socket 754 / 939 / 940 / AM2 / LGA 775

will it work for AM3?

i saw you had it on your Phenom II 550BE and that is AM3 did you have to do anything to make it fit?

and

http://www.hisdigital.com/us/product2-536.shtml

"Power Supply Requirement 450 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireXTM technology in dual mode)"

will that psu push 75W on the 6pin?

The Sunbeam cooler will work fine on AM3, Really Amd's mounting hasn't changed since socket 939. If you had a cooler on a 939 CPU it will most likely work fine on AM3, So anyway, Yeah the Cooler is good to go on AM3.
As far as the PSU, It will work fine with your video card and you shouldn't have to worry about amps or wattage with your proposed build. If you O.C. your CPU and video card you will likely still be just breaking 300 watts of total system draw.
Good luck with your build...

I did find this

I would stick with the Corsair, Here is a review of the Neo's big brother, Same build platform..

http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=117

well I did pick up the check today and will be putting in the bank tomorrow, and starting the purchasing then, I did find out that I wont have to make a payment till august so that opens up some room to buy a monitor as well

I like the corsair I really do, I'm still leaning to a dual rail psu for expansion purposes, and add more hd's for a raid array. I saw that review about the antec neo, and it's to bad it performed as poorly as it did, I actually expected more, I dont plan on using a UPS so there will be no power conditioning to the psu so I have to be extra careful in this choice

$71.98 for this corsair for 450W just seems pricier than I want to go, I know the quality is top rated but for an all around system, I'm ok with going with a another good brand. I'm hoping for keeping the psu at about 60% or lower of it's total abilities, more is better. but also better is better..such as

$69.64
it's about the same price, but gives me that last little push to keep it below full load when I'm blazing away, remember I'm not a hard core OC'er (yet) but for this rig, i dont want to leave myself short for other yet to be determined upgrades (sound card, card reader, wireless card, etc..)

i spent some time researching the benefits of sata6 vs sata3 for platter drives and decided to go with a sata3 drive to save money, the sata6 ssd's can be for when they drop in price, could even do a sata6 ssd raid 0.
With the spare money it allowed me to up to the 955be, but barely considering the monitor I would like to get. still need a sata dvd burner, $20, but that will still have to come later. and with the better proc...am getting better ram.

this is the new hard drive
Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

the monitor I am looking at is

Acer X233Hbd 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...rkey=Acer X233H bd 23" Widescreen LCD Monitor
$179.99

I'm looking for big, since I will be going back to a single monitor system I've gotten way to used to the extra realestate, and one of the other things I do alot is plug my current box by svideo to my 30in big box tv for movies. this will take over that job, and am thinking I might get a tuner card.. Even with the extra money, if I get the corsair or Xclio I wont get the burner, I have the pata's but that is not going to be permanent, I'm not looking forward to installing 7 with a pata, though I'm sure it wont be too bad (any thoughts?)

I'm also going to get the 7-7-7-24 ripjaws
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231279&Tpk=F3-12800CL7D-4GBRH

i'm sure the other is fine but I'm shooting for more than I need to start with
so price comes out to be 1032.23 with everything from newegg but the monitor through tigerdirect,

so in shorthand..
ASUS M4A87TD/USB (SB870)
AMD PhenomII 955BE 3.2 (OC'd to ???)
G-Skill Ripjaws CL7D 1600mhz cas7 (Oc'd to ???)
HIS H577FK1GD Radeon HD 5770 (Oc'd to ???)
WD CaviarBlack Sata3 640/7200/32
Sunbeam CR-CCTF Air-cooled (??c)
Rosewill Challeger 4X120mm 1X140mm
ACER X233Hbd 23.6" HD-LCD

so, do you think I can get 4.2Ghz out of this thing, and keep it cool?, this would probably cost about 13/14 hundred dollars somewhere like Ibuypower or cyberpc, or any of those other "configurators". Alienware would probably charge me $2400! ha! this will be the 5th computer I've built from the ground up in the last 7 years (3 were for other friends)

it may not be the pimpest of rides, but under the hood, it's got what it takes:clap:

p.s. and it's color coordinated (blue fans, blue board, blue grx fan, cas 8 ram is blue and the 7 is red , well you can't win them all, there are alwasye blue heat spreaders

for cooler go true black because it comes with the am3 mounting bracket with 2 push pull fans:thup:
ultra products are garbage
