I just picked up the Cooler master 212 plus, however I'm not liking it due to the fact the heat pipes are exposed and will not have clean contact with the CPU. The heat paste will go in between the pipes. Not liking that.

However, I've always wanted to go water cooling, but never wanted the mess...

http://www.corsair.com/products/h50/default.aspx

I found the CORSAIR Cooling Hydro Series Model CWCH50-1, and would seem to fit the bill for me. Since you guys are water cooling guru's, please let me know what you think. I like it because I can put the radiator in the back where my current 120mm fan is... The price point is perfect too. Sealed no maintenance cooler... What I'm looking for.

Newegg has it for under $80 bucks, free shipping..

And since its CORSAIR, its got to kick ***...

Mixed reviews really. Its about as good as high end air cooling (that you can get for less).

Hmm.. SO its not a good solution then? The 212 Plus is better??

I wish I can find out what others are using... A new thread?

Search for MUCH discussion on the H50.

We don't really consider it watercooling. It is no better than a top air cooled heatsink. The rad is too small, the fan need to be reversed for good cooling.

There is a different way to apply TPaste on an exposed HDT cooler. Your heatsink is rated as one of the better ones on Frosty's site.

This is the search from this site... http://www.ocforums.com/search.php?searchid=5562253

Maybe the push/pull config will help, but its not much if any better than high end air :-/...Super convienent though.

Ok.. I want to get 4+ Ghz on my i7 860... Can I achieve this via air? or liquid cooling? I just liked the sealed system and all... Entry level for me... ;)

You can do it on air, might need better fans on the HS and good case cooling. 4.0 isn't that hard to get on these newer i7's? I know a 920 4.0 is very easy.

The h50 is below entry level for watercooling. It's a cooler that happens to have water. It has none of the benefits (temps or low noise) that real watercooling has.

SO, save my money, and add another fan to my current cooler.. and hope for the best?

Basically, yes. A high-end air cooler can do anything an H50 can do, but without the risk of a leak. If someone is considering it just to have some tubing, a pump and a (crappy) radiator in their case, go for it. If the same person is trying to get it to either lower temperatures, reduce noise or both, it's a waste of money.

FYI, unfortunately most 860s are no D0 920. I've got a real water setup that will out-perform that H50 and 3.8GHz stable is all I'm doing for 24/7 clocks. 4.0 just takes too much Vcore. It would be reasonable if I didn't crunch 24/7, but I do. Temps hover in the low-to-mid 60's at this overclock.

I don't plan on doing that. Its just for gaming. 3 to 4 hours or less on at a time... Best buy has this on sale for $59... I don't want tubing in my case. The Cooler master 212 plus is what I have now. (Not installed yet) You're saying that is a better cooling solution than the H50?

I don't know as I don't have any experience with that particular cooler. If it performs at or near the level of a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme (aka TRUE), it is equally as good as an H50 and there is no reason to waste your money.

Look at the link to Frostytech Conumdrum posted (can't from work), see where it lies. If it's in the higher-end range, save your money.

Somehow it has your cooler performing better than a TRUE (wha?!!!?!?!!). I dont believe that, however I would still keep what you have a drop $15 on another fan as opposed to $80 for the same temps. ;)

EDIT: Oops... that list is different than the one conundrum posted and has the TRUE up top. But yeah, advice still stands. Get another fan if you arent happy and save yourself some coin.

Intel processors vary in power output between single and multi-core models, so FrostyTech tests heatsinks with two thermal loads that represent the upper limit of each CPU family; 150W and 85W.
With a 150W heat load applied by the Intel LGA775 version of FrostyTech's synthetic thermal test platform, the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus heatsink once again rises to the top of the reference list. In this case, the Hyper 212 Plus yields a result of just 16.9°C over ambient at stock fan speed, with a moderately audible 50.1dBA noise

The Hyper 212 Plus heatsink was then tested with a reduced fan speed of 600RPM, which resulted in a good 29.1°C rise over ambient temperature and reduction in noise to 35.3 dBA.
On the 85W heat load test, Coolermaster's Hyper 212 Plus heatsink maintained a 10.9°C rise over ambient at stock fan speed, and 19.0°C over ambient at a reduced fan speed. Not much of change there, so you might as well enjoy the
if your CPU is rated for an 85W TDP.

Given that the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus follows in the footsteps of quite a few exposed heatpipe heatsinks, these results are not too surprising. The
Coolermaster supply with the Hyper 212 Plus is rated for 21-77CFM, and while moderately audible at full speed is easy to live with.

If you happen to have an energy efficient processor (85W or 65W TDP) you'll get the best of both worlds by running the Hyper 212 Plus at reduced fan speeds where operation is essentially silent. In any event, the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus is an economical and well performing tower heatsink which is suitable for Intel 775 Core 2 Duo/Core i7 and AMD Phenom II processor. Recommended

Based on those numbers, the H50 is probably very similar to the 212 as far as thermal performance. Again - don't waste your money. If you want better, go water. Don't go water-look-a-like-that-performs-like-air. It increases the risk to your equipment for very little benefit (if indeed there is any).

i view the h50 as follows.

Pros.
cheap
as good as high end air
sealed system so no maintenance.

Cons.
it's still out but i question the quality of the system and pump
it's as good as high end air... which is as good as low end water
if your getting it to "get your feet wet" there is no point as you learn nothing from it
no expandability and undersized rad for most tasks.

so if you only looking for a cheap high end air cooler, go ahead. otherwise i wouldn't touch it.

I've seen some people online who rave about that Corsair unit, it's not going to let you reach the sky but if it calls to you, get it!
