Hi everyone. I just updated to AMDs 12.11 beta 4 drivers from 12.8.

I ran 3Dmark 11 before and after. I didn't run any games, but if people want me to, give me a list of games and I can get that done soon :)

Test setup:
CPU: Intel i7 2600K @ 5Ghz
MB: Asus Maximus IV Gene-3/Genz
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper DDR3-1866
GPU: MSI R7970 Lightning
OS: Win7 x64

This is a clean install of Windows, and any programs that aren't needed are closed upon starting Windows. I ran every configuration multiple times, and got nearly identical results.

12.8 results
For the first run, I ran the gpu at stock settings.
P9297 marks

(Yes, I know I screwed up the screenshot)

For the second run with 12.8 drivers, I overclocked the GPU to 1215/1485 (Core clock/memory clock)
P10247 marks

RUN 2.JPG

12.11b4 results
GPU at stock clocks.
P10465 marks

RUN 3- 12.11b4.JPG

GPU overclocked to 1215/1485:
P11428 marks

run 4.JPG

Results:

[oldtable]GPU | 12.8 results | 12.11 beta 4 results | Performance Increase
Stock | P9297 | P10465 | 12.56%
Overclocked | P10247 | P11428 | 11.51% [/table]

Nice results. So the only question is what they improved or what is missing in these drivers ;)

BF3 = Ultra Preset (All maximum settings) @ 1920 x 1080P; Gigabyte 7870 @ 1200 / 1500

Thats funny as I, in my head said, 'oh dear god, please no IQ issues again'!! :D

I made only some fast runs in 3DM11 and Vantage and so far I haven't seen any problems with quality ( drivers on default settings ).
I also checked 12.11 Beta3 and Beta4 and both are working the same.
On my daily pc with 7970/stock clocks, results in 3DM11 and Vantage are about 1k better on 12.11 beta than on 12.9 beta.

Edit:
I found review of these drivers where is also info that power consumption on 12.11 is higher by about 12W under load. So maybe they changed something significant after all.

That explains why i'm down on my maximum overclock from 1250 to 1240.
Which is not even worth thinking about given that performance is up significantly in every game i own, (other than Dirt Showdown which is actually down a little for some strange reason)

As stated above, we dont think so, No. Its only for the GCN architecture.

How would that explain it?

Interesting... never thought about it that way! It didnt change a thing on my peak 3d11 clocks though.

Perhaps Frakk is really on the brink of stability and that could be part of it?

No clue.

What jaymz9350 said.

On 12.8 i could get it to pass stress testing @ 1250 - 1.3v and i have benched at that speed a few time (but it feels like a death run)

On 12.11 it just will not go over 1240 @ 1.3v any more (and it feels even more like a death run)

Its pretty clear i don't have a good Gigabyte 7870, 2 on ocUK bought the same card as me, one ofter my recommendation and then had the nerve to post a 1315Mhz stress test pass

Another got a cheap B-Grade one and got that to 1280Mhz on the stock volts, and then posted 3DMar11 score clocked at way over 1300Mhz

Silicone lottery.... Meh, i have it now, i'm still very happy with it and (used to) run it daily @ 1200 / 1500. i now run it @ 1185 / 1450 to give it a little breather and because the new drivers have such a massive boost, tho i will probably clock it back up to my usual again soon :D
