in warcraft 3, how do you play online with other people?

through Battle.net. should be one of the options on the main menu

Yes, simply click battle.net and it will get you going. The accounts are free and once made to join a game is very simple just follow the icons up top.

it's in the main menu right after you start up the game. It should be under the single player button

do you actually play as one person controling an army or do you just control it like, you yourself in person

Just like any other RTS game, you build buildings which produce units, then control the units in groups in top down view. You can give group commands to all the units you have selected and give commands to single units, if that's what you were asking.
