I'm getting a headache just counting all these SKUs. Maybe later I'll try to organize it all.

It appears that every version will be available in four varieties: 1) Full Install, 2) Upgrade, 3) Full Install-Licence [only] (meaning just a key, no media?) and 4) Upgrade Licence [only]. Interestingly, all the install media is DVD ONLY.

Here is Amazon's pre-order pricing:

I read that VISTA will be £142 over here in the Uk stuff that I paid £110 for XP Pro 3 years ago. I thought that was day light robbery my next build will be an X2 system maybe 4X4 if I win some money. But it'll have XP on it I think cause VISTA would takes ages getting used to in my book and I hate having to start from scratch on another new op system.

Wonder what discount Beta testers will get? Kinda sucks that it will be that expensive, but XP is still pretty much the same price as it was 5 years ago... might as well suck it up cause it will proably be that way till the next windows.

Why would a basic upgrade be a DVD? I guess one DVD is cheaper to make than 2 CD's?
Try 4+ CDs. The iso file for the ultimate beta2 was over 3GB and the install used over 9GB of hard drive space just for Vista before any apps were installed.

Maybe RC1 testers :D will be given a good discount.

OTOH when Microsoft sees few buyers, maybe they will have sales incentives to boost deployments.

people preordering software..??

WTF ?

its not like CPU's that need to be built

to make these CD's isn't it just a bunch of DVD burners and lightscribe (substitute) drives ?

there should never be any software supply issues...

You basically trade in PC performance for visual eye-candied windows, menus and thousands of OS bugs that seem to never be fixed. Does anyone else find that new start menu just plain stupid? It's also more complicated to do other simple tasks such as navigating to an imbedded folder. I'll being staying with XP for now unless something gives with Vista...something REAL BIG.

My gripes with the start menu were the ABSOLUTELY RETARDED "Programs" implementation. Terrible. And the shutdown button not being able to be configured, tweaked, changed, whatever. Pressing the button leads to sleep or standy by or whatever. You actually have to click a few menus in, in order to shutdown. I shall miss being able to just hit winkey -> U -> U to shutdown windows.

I don't know if there were other things I didn't like about the start menu...but I guess there wasn't since those are the only two things that always come immediately to mind.

Ditto. XP works just fine, and unless DirectX 10 offers some serious graphics improvements (like what pixel shader 2.0 brought the masses) it's wholly useless to me.

Those prices are downright insane. I haven't read a whole lot about Vista, but what I have read is not convincing enough for me to upgrade to it. The biggest feature I was excited about was WinFS and they stripped that out due to "time" and "complications"

I think I'll stick with my current mix of XP Pro and Ubuntu for now......
