How do I fix “choppy” DVD playback?

hey can someone help me? every time i burn a movie and play it on my portable dvd player it lags i tried switchin softwares from nero to convertxtodvd but that didn't work im starting to think it's my dvd drive but just to be sure i wanna know what yall think the problem is or how can i go about fixing this problem
