Does ide cables have to be specific length, or can i open the plastic connectors and cut it down to my preferred length with no problems?

Going downward on length should pose no problems. Making longer cables can lead to signal degradation in some cases. Make sure to realign the connectors carefully though.

I do it all the time...well, until Abit sent me some cool black ones with this new mobo.

Two rules:
*Reuse the black plug on the end, not the grey middle one. There's one pin missing in the middle one.
*If you have a raid, make them as close as you can to the exact same length.

It also helps to mark it before you remove it, so you don't change it around.;)
