It's better to just remove the IHS, as then you see the difference in thermals. Lapping barely helps, or you have to make the IHS very thin, and it's a lot of work to make it right. The only problem is finding a proper cooler with a fitting mounting kit. You will be limited to liquid coolers or something like Noctua with a mounting kit for delidded CPUs. It fits perfectly, but it's still not worth to delid lower CPUs.
