LED array active matrix LCD's?

I remember seeing about a year ago an article on Tom's Hardware showing prototypes of LCD displays that use an array of LED's for backlighting. This was to reduce power consumption and provide an even lighting across the pannel and was highly praised....have these come out at all or close to? I have heard nothing more on these.
