I also run with out it on my laptop for the same reason + I like to keep my drive lean. Now as for the USB 2.0 drivers, sorry but it's not a problem. I have many 2.0 devices 3 different HDD cases each with it's own drivers and some other things too. All I do is use the driver disk if it doesn't find the right drivers on instal.
PS my Lap top is a Dell Inspiron 4000 850Mhz w/512MB
 
for firewire you have to have SP1 installed...but since w2k seems to be the favorite for AMD's...I will keep my SP1 XP setup (dont want to lose my firewire for my camera) and just redo my W2K partition and start using that strickly for benching now..
