Hi all

I am looking for a bit of help in tweaking. I have my ram set at 2.5-3-3-6 8 my vdim is at 2.85 at a ratio of 5:4.

I have o/c my P4 3.0 to 230mhz which gives me 3.45. My cpu voltage is 1.65v. This is pretty stabel and has a cpu temp of below 40 idle.

My question is can i squeeze any more out of anything? As it stands I cant go above 230 as my pc wont boot.

Ok there are a few things with that board that I have noticed. One...make sure that performance mode is not auto, or turbo, but set to standard. This gave me 200mhz more on over all cpu speed. Next lock your agp/pci to 66.6/33.3 mhz (if u go over 300 mhz fsb this lock is gone). Next add a fan to the northbridge heatsink. Add a fan to blow air out of your case for a 10 degree drop. For me if I am overclocking I cannot leave my memory timings by spd, they have to be set by me even if I leave them on default just set spd to disabled. Now I hope you know how to use memory dividers because they are the most important thing here.

What speed ram do you have? If you have ddr-400 (pc-3200) then the speed of that ram is 200Mhz (200 x 2 = pc-400, hense Double Data Rate). In the bios there is a memory speed setting that has the options "266", "400", and I think "333". They don't expect you to overclock manually so "400" means stock 1:1 ratio, meaning whatever the fsb is that is the speed of the memory. The "266" is the 3:2 ratio this will give you the best cpu overclock at higher settings when the "333" (aka 5:4) is outdone.

Basically it will underclock your ram though, meaning it will not run at full speed. My ram runs at 194Mhz (ddr-388) when my fsb is 292. When I set to 300 fsb, with the 3:2 ratio my ran is at 200Mhz (ddr-400).

1:1 ratio makes it run in sync to offer the best performance but it is a major limiter of overclocking if you do not have like ddr-600 ram. At least for me.

Also, get a good heatsink if you are still using stock.

EDIT: as i was trying this is noticed you wrote 5:4 divider. The 5:4 divider is somewhat buggy on that board so i suggest 3:2 or 1:1. I am getting 3.5 out of my 2.4 and i can do 3.6 but i need some peace of mind. Also the boards voltage is not stable and there is a hardware mod so when i selected 1.6 Core volts its 1.66 idle and 1.57- 1.58 load. I wrote to asus telling them to fix it but nothing. There is a lengthy thread about it on the forums here, search for it.

ive tried that and got my cpu upto 3.75 but my ram is at 166mhz. would my cpu at 3.55 and my ram at 188 be better?
 
Well i guess that depends on your needs and choice of applications. 188 would be much better simply because you will be getting more out of your money, 166 means that you might as well have bought ddr-333. So run it at 188 unless you are using much more cpu intensive apps instead of memory intensive.
 
ok. now ive managed to get 3.87 with 172 ram.

so final question is the above or 3.55 at 188
 
How is your CPU temp under load? I would be careful running at 1.65 volts with the stock Intel heatsink. You should consider getting one of the Thermalright heatsinks and a med-to-high CFM fan.

You could try running some benchmarks at each speed and see which one performs better.

To anyone else, is there any fix for the 5:4 divider issue (updated BIOS or something)? Sounds like 3.75 GHz 5:4 (memory at 200 MHz) would be idle for his CPU.
 
Like all 865/875 mobos it probably depends on what type of memory you're using. I haven't noticed any problems running this board at 5/4 with bh-5 chips.
