Skinflints can cut those costs considerably.
I would probably start by risking the $50 bucks with the 3000....hey, it's 33% cheaper.
You could make a decent argument to go really cheap with a Palermo 2800 and a 754 board. Bang/buck is great here. Upgrade to Newark soon after.
Reuse old ram.....running async is no biggie with K8.
Not interested in sound? Onboard ho!
Old case, old cooling, old drives.
Windows? Assume you're replacing a system, use the copy you've already bought, or well, you know wink wink, nudge nudge....say no more.
The only real non-starter is the graphics. The budget options aren't really there. PCIX doesn't have a real advantage over AGP now. By the time it does, I'll be getting a new mobo anyway. If I were building a new system I'd go 6600gt or go with Ed's choice, but be ****ed about it like he is. And SLI is for chumps.
As far as 64 bit goes, well we have an OS that is just barely supported in drivers, and apps to make the most of it are few....and NONE for games. Another arguement to go Sempron. By the time you need it, AMD will buckle and put it on Sempron. AFAIK, Newark already has it.
Frankly, I'm looking for a reason to upgrade at all.
When Doom 3 came out, I was sure I'd have to pony up, but it ran fine at HQ, 10x7 and looked great.
Same with Half life 2/CS:S. It would be nice to run higher res, but no biggie.
