What makes a good sound card??

Sup, i was just curious. I have a SB Live! Value from like 3 years ago when i didn't know **** about building computers and i bought a dell. Today it still seems to work great and i haven't had any trouble with it . What makes Audigy sound cards so much better than the Live family?
I was considering switching, however, i would need more information on such an issue before doing so.
Any help would be appreciated.

Unless you are an audiophile there is no need of upgrading, audidy sounds same as live! according to most people.
