That's the confusing part about what they've been saying. It sounds like it is locked to the device.

that's what it is reading like to me, MS allways owns the os and locks it to the device.

I am curious to see if in a year or two the OS will be completely free. I think ultimately it is a smarter choice for Microsoft to get everyone on the same platform (if possible) and make it open to their app environment.

When you install an OEM version of Windows, isn't it locked to the particular MB? I remember when I only changed MBs on my X58 rig, I had to call in to get another serial to get Windows updates working for Win 7 Pro 64-bit OEM.

I understand if that's the case with OEMs, but I have a retail version and this is pretty stupid if it is tied to the original machine you upgrade from.

OEM is a non starter for me unless it's installed on a store bought PC. No way I'm trading in a portable win 7 COA for a locked in OEM win 10. I'm hoping the Insider-tester deal is real so I don't have to trade in anything.

Preview upgraded to RTM for free with nothing in between would be logical to lock to a machine.

But where & when did anyone hear about locking Windows 7/8 Retail upgraded to 10 to a machine? Where did that come from. That would not make sense, so in absence of proof, the assumption until July 29 should be that you won;t get locked to a machine if you already have Retail and upgrade.

If it's a free update, I could see them giving us the least common denominator, OEM. In the absence of more details from them, I'm assuming the worst, because that's how it often turns out unless there's a huge user outcry. I don't have a problem with a free copy of RTM being OEM. I do have an issue if I lose freedom converting any of my win 7 COAs.

Your concern is legitimate. I return to pointing out that we have no proof that anything like that will take place, so we should accentuate the fact that we don't know yet, otherwise it'll be the same as with the subscription story...

Well Microsoft is doing it to themselves, by being too coy so as not to give up any of their options. KISS principle isn't being used and it'll come back to bite them again. Vista was mostly a marketing debacle rather than bad software. I liked Vista and didn't think it was so bad they couldn't have fixed any issues to make it the win 7 it should have been.

Even if it is 'locked to a device, I have installed a few different versions of OEM windows to a number of different PCs, just had to call ms, tell them that I only have it installed on 1 PC, and everything was good to go.
If it ever got questioned further, I bought OEM windows with a pack of screws that I transfer from one PC to the next, haha.

So what is the final word on price? Free for a year, then $99 a year there after? I do not recall where I read that it would be $99 a year, but someone compared it to XBOX live service fee.

there is no subscription for windows 10.
free to upgrade to it for a year, if coming off windows 7/8
regular price after that.

Regular price after a year? One time cost? Seems to me that once they have you locked in with Windows 10, the chances of you going back to 7/8/8.1 is slim to none. You've already made that OS yours with all your apps, etc.. I would image the drive, then restore it to a new drive, then upgrade from there. This way if they pull the "ol-switch-a-roo", you could go back by putting in your old OS drive from a year ago.

Thank goodness!! It may be possible that they were leaning towards the subscription, and screwed the pooch by thinking they could get away with it. The negative feedback they received since the tech preview may have changed all of it.

Tracy

Windows 10 will not be subscription based. You are not alone in incorrectly thinking so, Microsoft shot themselves in the foot by not making that clear earlier.
$110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832416892
$150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832588491

So no subscription, everything is like it used to be With Windows 7/8, you by it ONCE.
FREE Windows 10 upgrade to legitimate owners of Windows 7/8 in the first year however.

Where's Windows 10 'full retail' versions?

Microsoft Windows 8.1 - Full Version (32 & 64-bit) is available, but nothing of the sort for win 10.

Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.
Still sounds like you'll get OEM version that locks to that device. Saw nothing on MS Q&A page concerning 'Full Version' 'Retail' vs OEM version.

'Free' Windows 10 Has High Cost To Windows 7 And Windows 8 Users

Releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130 for PCs to the Slow ring

Releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10130 for PCs to the Slow ring
June 12, 2015 by Gabe Aul

Hi everyone, we are releasing Build 10130 of the Windows 10 Insider Preview to Windows Insiders in the Slow ring. This build has been in use by Windows Insiders in the Fast ring since 5/29 and has proven to be stable enough to publish for Insiders in the Slow ring along with a few fixes that we made for top issues being hit in the Fast ring. You can read about what’s new in Build 10130 in my blog post here. Here are the fixes that are immediately available for Build 10130:

*KB3070365: We fixed an issue where if you click on the icons on the Taskbar (Start, Cortana, Network, Battery, and Action Center) in this build, the expected fly-out might not open.
*KB3069069: We fixed the issue where after upgrading to this build audio playback is lost in some hardware configurations.
Note: Some sound cards may fail to operate in multichannel mode. The workaround to the problem is to set the default audio format to stereo.
*KB3070677: We fixed an issue where if you’re running the “Core” edition of the Windows 10 Insider Preview and Windows Update might not detect new builds available.
*KB3070982: This dynamic update prevents an issue that can result in the loss of audio when the upgrade is completed in some hardware configurations.

Some of these will be applied during setup of the build as Dynamic Updates, but check Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates after you’ve upgraded to make sure you have everything you’ll need.

There is a known issue with the Surface 3 that prevents the Windows 10 Insider Preview from installing – we suggest holding off until we fix this issue. One last thing, if you hit an error code of 0x80246017 trying to install this build from Windows Update, you can download the ISO. With the ISO, you can open it and upgrade directly from the ISO to get unblocked.

Thanks,
g
