well i just got a job and i want to get a new vid card prob 9800non pro and i dont want my 1800xp bottlenecking the video card so i want to buy a new cpu also so i need help choosing a new cpu but i'm kinda noobish so i need some help. first of all i have 768 megs of pc2100 ram so does the bus speed of the cpu need to be 266? because i'm lookin at the barton 2500 which has a bus speed of 333. will my ram underclock that cpu? so any links to good cpus i can use will be appreciated. also my cpu right now seems to run a litle hot 50C so i was wondering if any good quiet heatsink fans out there thanx every1 who helps

A Tbred B 1700 does very well when overclocked. RAM prices are pretty low so I'd suggest selling your PC2100 and picking up 2x256MB of PC3200 or faster and overclocking the 1700 to something like 220x10 using an SLK900 with a 92mm fan that isn't too loud. It can be done :)

If you've got good RAM, it may be able to do 166MHz but it may need some coaxing (e.g. voltage and loose timings).

i agree with THT the 1700+ is a great ocer i just got mine in 30 minutes ago did a quick burnin and BAM oced quite easily from 1.477ghz to 2.346ghz and i still have some head room :)

What happens with PC2100 and T-Bred B.
Depending on other components, this:

2100+ AIUHB 0248
256MB Crucial PC2100 + 2x 256MB Kingston (Hynix chip) PC2100 7 4 4 3 @ 6 3 3 2
[204] FSB x 11 = 2244 MHz @ 1.8 Vcore with memory bus at 75% [153] @ 2.77 Vdimm
37(min) C to 46(max) C Winter
42(min) C to 50(max) C Summer
Epox 8RDA+
Thermalright SK-7 with variable speed 80x25mm YS-Tech FD1281259B-2F
BFG GeForce4 Ti4200 8X 128MB; Antec SX-835II case ; 350W Antec SmartPower SL350
Five 80x25mm Ultra Quiet 18CFM Case Fans (NMB C3110KL-04W-B19)

Be sure to get one of the PCI locked nForce2 mobos though.

What MB are you using? The 2500+ is a great choice. You have to OC a 1700 100 mhz than a Barton to get the same performance. So a 2.3 Barton is as fast as a 2.4 1700.
You should look at upgrading your ram but it is not absolutely neccessary. Depending on your MB you can adjust the fsb and cpu multipliers.
For A HSF the Thermalright SLK 800 or 900 are great. For the fan it depends how much sound your willing to tolerate. Keep in mind that quiet fans do not push much air.

the thing is i've never overclocked before of course i want to but my cpu temp right now is already pretty high at 50C i was expecting my heat sink and fan to do a lot better than it does but i cant do anything bout it. plus prob wont overclock so i'll just get a cpu like 2600+ xp because me being noob to overclocking i prob wont feel comfortable doing it unless i had some1 with experience with me doing it which i dont thanx for the help though

i just got a job at best buy :) so hopefully i'll have some money to buy new stuff for my comp i might turn my comp now into a server or a backup comp so i might just build a whole new one but that's thinking 2 far right now i would love a faster comp but icant complain with mine now i just want a new vid card and a cpu that wont bottleneck it
