It depends upon the speed of the machine. It would need to be roughly 200 MHz or faster in order to complete some of the work on time.
 
I use a linux distro called freesco you can get it at www.freesco.org It has worked well for me and it support dialup as well as ethernet routing for Cable and DSL. I have it running on an old 486/33 with 16 meg of ram. All you need it a floppy but I like to run mine from and old 340Meg HD. It works best with two PCI ne2000 cards as it can auto detect the hardware settings. It can do autodetect on some other cards as well but I wont bother to guess what ones.
