First of all welcome:welcome:

I'm pretty new here myself, but maybe i can help offer a little input on your purchases.

Have Installed
(1) Corsair CWCH50-1 Hydro H50 CPU Liquid Cooler ($79) <-- Good buy
(1) Intel i7 Processor i7-930 2.80GHz 8MB LGA1366 CPU, Retail Box($260) <--Great CPU
(1) GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD7 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ($339) <-- Great board but watch those temps when overclocking :)
(1) EVGA GeForce GTX 480 (Fermi) SC Video Card - 1536MB GDDR5 ($489) <-- You can SLI 2xGTX470's for less money and better performance. But it looks like you want to SLI 2xGTX480's which is awesome.
(2) Ultra U12-40645 120mm Washable Fan Filter ($9) <-- Cool
(1) Athena Power RM-4U4034S60 4U Rackmount Server Case 600W($135) <--Make sure you get exactly what you want for easy install/cool case
(1) NORCO PIK-230U 1U Rackmount drawer - OEM ($131) <--Waste of money IMO...if you want the best then get the best :)

Still Waiting for Shipment
(1) G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) ($175) <--DDR3 1600 is more than sufficent. I run DDR3-1066 OC'd
(1) Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders - OEM ($175)<--If you lived close i could install this free :) I have an extra disk.
(2) Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive ($399) <-- Are you looking at both speed and storage?
(1) LITE-ON 24X DVD Writer Black SATA Model iHAS424-98 LightScribe Support ($25) <--Great drive...handle with care though

Near Future Upgrade when I have more money
(1) Ultra X4 1200-Watt Modular Power Supply - 135mm Fan ($250)<--More than enough power to SLI 2xFermi's. Check amps/cable length thoroughly.
(2) Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive ($399)<--Again speed or storage your goal?

My Future Upgrade Goals
(1) G.SKILL Trident+ Turbulence II 24GB (6 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) ($1300) <-- DDR3 2000 is pure overkill and a waste IMO. But for special programs its useful when overclocked.
(1) PNY VCQFX4700X2-PCIE-PB Quadro FX4700 X2 2GB (1 GB per GPU) 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Dual GPU Ultimate Visualization Solution - OEM ($1300)<--Assuming you are running Auto Cad or something
(1) EVGA GeForce GTX 480 (Fermi) SC Video Card - 1536MB GDDR5 ($489)<--2xGTX480's You are on top of the world :) Have you looked into the HD5970?..that card is amazing.

To be honest, seems you're looking to heat things up very quickly. With this kinda budget, i highly recommend you look into liquid cooling. The H50 is a decent cooler, but only for the CPU. Your GPU's will heat up very quickly which is where you have to be careful too.

+10 to him. He pretty much hit the nail on the head. DDR3 1600 is plenty. I'm running 1066OCed, and haven't had any problems. DDR3 2000 is horribly overkill, and some IMCs have trouble getting up to that speed.

The H50 is about as good as High End air, but usually quieter. A good way to get into WC in my opinion.

I'd get a Corsair PSU or one of the bigger name brands. They use much higher quality caps, heatsinks, etc, and usually last MUCH longer. Since it's only temporary, i'd think that you're fine for now though. Just be careful how far you push it.

8TB of storage is slightly overkill though, dontcha think? You could probably pull off a small SSD for the system, and then have a single 2TB drive for storage (though, the 2TB drives are having pretty bad reliability problems, so i'd steer clear of them in general) for just as much money.

Overall, it looks pretty good... much better than my build did when i first started shopping :)

:welcome: to the forums!! Hope you enjoy your stay :)

I'm wondering if anyone ever mounted their Hard Drive upside down. I'm in a battle for space and it seems that is my only alternative. My questions are; does it matter how the HD is mounted? And what is the downside in mounting them upside-down. Anyone that ever done this before or knows anything about these kind of situations, please shed me some light.

You can but the bottoms (LOL) have to be far enough apart not to touch.

First system I ever built, I did that by accident and it ran fine for 3 years before I noticed it. :chair:

Hey man...:welcome: to OCForums :)

Some of the other guys eluded to it, but we'd really need to know more about you're intended usage in order to best advise you. Specifically, what do you think you're going to need 24GB of RAM for? Also, how do you plan to use 2 480s and two workstation CAD video cards for? Do you plan to use them in the same system at the same time?

If you'd like to learn about how to overclock the system, and maximize your performance, make sure you read our guide here....click the link in my sig
