ATI Radeon HD 4870 not living up to it's name.

Kind of low. If it makes you feel any better. I average around 150fps on COD4 w/ a Radeon 4850.
You shouldn't have any problems having a higher fps if you raise the maxfps in cod4 to 250.

Have you tried any other games or benchmarking tools to see how those compare?

What's a good Benchmarking tool that I can use so that I can post the results here? I've been feeling very sh-tty about the way my card is performing. I need to get down to the bottom of this issue.

Run 3DMark06 and post your SM 2.0 & SM 3.0 scores, and also the clocks you do the run at.

Your card is performing quite under...what driver are you running again? How fresh is your format? Did you uninstall the previous drivers correctly? (if applicable). It would also be worth a fresh format, 8.12's, updated DirectX...if it's not software related, something is wrong with your card. I know CPU's play a big roll, but you should at least be able to match my SM 2.0/3.0 score...

I just got a score of 11014 after overclocking. If your CPU's score is added to the final score, then you are about 3-4K over my score simply due to your processor's score. My processor only recieved a score of 2262 compared to your 4K+.

I overclocked from 700/900 to 800/950 and now my FPS at idle in Warhammer is 80, and my FPS in CSS at MINIMUM is 160, and maxes at 260 while in buildings. That's such a huge boost from what I'd consider a small overclock(I'm a new overclocker). Also, my GPU is running at 51C while running Warhammer Online and that's with the stock Sapphire fan/heatsink. I don't know why I was getting such horrible FPS with the stock speeds.

EDIT:
The screenshot of the temp didn't work, oh well. =P

Hey man, congrats on the first OC :D

I was more so comparing just the GPU, minus the CPU run. Start readin up on clocking your CPU...I'm sure you can get something out of it ;0

OH, those temps for your 4870 are VERY good btw. Stock cooling?

I'm not going to overclock my CPU unless I get a better heatsink/fan and thermal paste. Right now at idle I run at 40C, and that's not as low as I'd like.

How high have others gotten their 4870's? I've seen alot of people complaining on newegg that they can't see to get the core clock stable above 780mhz. I'm at 815/1000 right now and running fine with a temp of 55C and about 45C idle with fan speed at 22%. What temperature should my GPU stay below at full load?

The average on the core is around 825 to 850, some higher, some lower. 512mb cards have seen up to 1200, averaging around 1100, but the GDDR5 doesn't make an incredible difference right now...but it doesn't hurt. As far as the 1gb GDDR5 cards like you got, some people struggle to hit 1ghz, I'd say you got a good card :) - I'd say no higher than 60 to 70C...but it's a personal limit, I've seen these cards upwards towards 90C...but that's just ridiculous for the card.

4870 512mb Q6600

I too suffer from low fps with my visiontek 4870 512mb. I always wonder if my cpu core speed of 2.4 is too low. Without better cooling i can only oc my cpu to 2.6. Im not going to oc my gpu, I do have crossfire and plan on adding a second gpu and hopefully that would be enough to run the game right... My girlfriends computer has a 3.2 core2duo and a 4850 which gets waaay better fps than my comp so yeah im thinking it is the cpu

Go get a $35 CPU cooler and overclock that CPU. As long as you have decent RAM, you should be able to get to around 3.2~3.6GHz. Why add a second video card if you you are just going to choke it too? EDIT: :welcome:

Dust the cobwebs off of this thread :)

But ya, you need to get that cpu clock up. I was very pleased with my 4870 that I had last year, across all games it performed well.

Well, I just tested F.E.A.R on maximum settings (4x AA and 16x AF, etc) and got a maximum of 140FPS, a minimum of 45FPS and an average of around 80. How's that seem for this card?

I have a 4890 which is like a 4870+, and on the same settings I got about 150ish max, 54min and about 90 average, so yeah that seems about right, seeing as how at the time my gpu was also overclocked 150mhz past what your 4870 runs at.

I got to about 815/1070 on mine stable at stock volts. (a 4870 1GB Sapphire with the new silent cooler)

I play Counter-Strike: Source competitively for over 3 years. It is very CPU intensive and only uses one core. A gpu can only put a minor difference to a game like that. However I got 100+ fps at all times running 4850 and a 2,83ghz cpu

Yep, only slowdowns I ever noticed in Source was on my x300SE which only has 128MB of shared video memory and 128MB of onboard memory. I had 100fps until I zoomed in with a sniper rifle, then they dropped to 30.

Other than that, 3870, 4870, 5870, all kill it because my processor is > 3.5ghz.
