best way to apply tim on a cpu with out a IHS

I'm rebuilding a old 3dfx system of mine and it has an old Pentium III with out an integrated heat-spreader (IHS)
you know the copper plate


looks like this

the old pent 3's run hot and use 1.7v :shock:
and I will be doing some overclocking with it

For processors without an IHS like that old P3, I always did spread a very thin layer of tim on the slug instead of using a line or pea sized spot like with a modern processor. And since it doesn't have a whole lot of are contacting the heatsink, it is a lot more forgiving of slightly too much tim, as the excess just squeezes out to the side of the slug.

Ahhh, the good old days of exposed processor slugs. :D
 
SLugs? Interesting term for a die/core...!

Anyhoo, I just used a SMALL amount of TIM and spread it with a business card.
 
With my opteron and no ihs I just spread a thin layer on the cpu and installed the cooler
