Okay, I'm hoping that Dumpa sees this thread again, I realize it's been a while.

So, yesterday I finally picked up a 4 way cable splitter as recommended, since I got this new MMO called APB and I kept disconnecting. Well, with the splitter this is now in the modem stats:

Name
WebSTAR DPC2100R2

Modem Serial Number
202678273

Hardware Version
2.0

Software Version
v2.0.2r1256-081120

Receive Power Level
0.7 dBmV

Transmit Power Level
35.2 dBmV

Cable Modem Status
Operational

So, my transmit power went up, and my receive power went down. I don't really know what this means or if this is good or bad, but it hasn't changed much in terms of my gaming experience. My internet seems to go into some sort of Standby mode every once in a while, where everything gets disconnected, but I'm still technically "Connected" to the internet. But I can't get back on unless I wait like 15 minutes or I cycle my network.

It's extremely frustrating because some nights are fantastic, I can play the game sitting pretty at 60ms ping, and it's great. And then some nights, or... most nights, like tonight my ping spikes badly 800+ ms. I realize this is a new MMO and it's kind of terrible to judge off of this because the servers have their own sets of issues to sort out. But like I said after a while my internet dies. When I play, I'm literally only running the game, steam and Skype which are connected to the internet. I shut everything else off.

I started trying to find a new modem now, but I have no idea what I'm looking for or if that's even my issue, and I figured I'd come back here and ask for assistance before I go blowing $50+ on something that won't help.

Also, I'd like to note, that when my connections being really bad, like 800+ ms on APB, Skype says my connectivity is low, I run over to Speedtest, my ping is normally around 20ms, download is around 15-18 mbps (which is slightly lower than what I normally run at, but not much) and upload is around 500kbps.

Ping test says I should be experiencing no issues. =/

Looking forward to your replies, Amo.

Edit:
I actually just did a speed test, and a ping test to see if this was still the case. I'm on the game (experiencing issues, and on Skype talking to a friend, plus Google Chrome now.)

Also did a traceroute to google.com

If you get a powerstrip & plug in the modem, when you need the turn it off then back on. You can just hit the switch, so you don't have to crawl under the desk. I live in hick country, nearest city is like 20 miles away & that is 45,000 pop. So all that is here is a wireless ISP. Sorry, useless info I guess, anyway, they gave us a modem that sometime will just hang, have to turn off the modem or router & turn it back on, depends on its "mood" sometimes power cycling the modem works, sometimes the router.

Been Googling all day long, random things... found out Comcast in my area has a lot of issues. Friggin' fantastic. Just once in my lifetime I'd love to pay for an internet service, get stable enough speeds to just play a damn video game and I'd be happy.

I'm not 100% sure if this is really my problem, but I've seen lots of Sacramento area complaints on the net about Comcast up here. Great, something else I'll just have to deal with.

Mine has only disconnected twice in the 9 months I've lived here. And that was cause they confused our house for another and physically disconnected it and when they bumped it from 6/1 to 12/2.

Also, a large portion of Sacramento has fiber available...

Also, I'd second keeping it cool. And maybe just ask Comcast if you can switch the modem out to see if it helps. They're normally very willing to do things like that.

What ISP do you have, Comcast?

Yes. I also had them when I was in Davis (from what I've read / heard, Davis Comcast is the same as Sacramento Comcast) for 3 years with very few disconnects.

It can vary from area to area though. It could just be the wiring in your neighborhood or even just your house. When I worked for a small cable ISP we had somebody that kept getting disconnected. We sent the cable guy out there and he found they had nicked the coax with a shovel while putting in a fence. I guess it was just enough to lower his signal sometimes.

We also fixed a lot of issues by swapping out modems.
