Genuine Windows 7 Upgrade but want to upgrade HD?

I bought a genuine student windows 7 upgrade version when I was in school. I installed it on my old harddrive with XP and it worked flawlessly.

Now that it has been a while and I want to get an SSD, is there any way for me to use the upgrade by any other means than installing xp on it then upgrading?

Is an option to transfer the image of the old HD then reformat? Any input would be appreciated on the most efficient method.

I would give this a try in a VM.

Get the version of win7 that you have the upgrade code for from > http://www.techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/

You will have to scroll down a bit, and the links are all legit ISOs from M$.

Install W7 on the VM, do not put a code in during install.
After the install is complete, activate windows using the code you have.

See what happens.
