This is what I need for the $300 budget:
CPU
Motherboard
2GB RAM (4GB if possible, but can be later upgrade)
Power Supply
Case

These are the parts I ALREADY HAVE:
GTX260 768MB
1TB HDD
Monitor

I really want to stick with the $300 budget. Basically my girlfriend wants a computer, so its a gift...I just want to see what the best I can get for $300 with the parts I need are. Then I can decide whether to do it or not, or get a different birthday gift.

She wants to play ROME Total war 2 on it...Graphics card should definitely do the trick. So hoping to get a decent backbone for it.

I believe Intel is out of the price range, hence I want to get something that can maybe do 90% of an i3/i5.

Thanks, but that does not include a case or PSU...

This is what I am thinking...Comes under budget and I can get a cooler with it too!

That cpu you have chosen AMD Athlon II X4 750K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor has NO onboard video so you must buy a video card to use with the motherboard. No video in cpu is why it is so cheap. 4 gigs of ram in a single stick is pretty elcheapo way to try and game.
RGone...

Yes. You are correct. The Original post states am I using a GTX260.

Unless stuff has changed in the last few years, dual channel provides negligible if no fps improvements. Doing it this way means I can add another 4GB stick later for her.

For the ~$3 price difference, I would get two RAM sticks (go 2x2 instead of 1x4).

Past that, looks pretty good.

cool I just learned something new, I had no idea that some athlons were fm2.
usful info because I have an older board I am thinking of puting to some service.

Dropped the bomb and went for it!

So this will be the system:

Antec VSK-3000 Case (mATX)
Corsair CX500 Modular
Athlon X4 Quad 750K 3.4GHz FM2
MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 FM2 A75 Hudson D3 Motherboard (mATX)
2x2GB Team Elite DDR3-1333
BFG 260GTX 768MB Maxcore55
1TB Seagate HDD

Her birthday isn't for about 2 weeks, so it should arrive this week and I will have a week to install a Windows 7 pro copy I have from MSNDAA and get some benchmarks in :D

You always have time for benchmarks :D

Not sure if your looking to new or not, but perhaps you could make a WTB thread and see if you can get some decent second hand parts??

Phenom II's x4 should be had for 80 or less used. Probably find a brand new board for 60$ with onboard and support for FX.

So I've been running with the X4 750K for about a week now and I gotta say I am pretty impressed. It loads Rome Total War II at stock 3.4GHz faster than my 2500k at 4GHz!
