Nice, Looks like the price on newegg has dropped $20 in a week.

from what i have read, AMD doesn't have any chips in the works that are going to close the gap with intel's high end chips. They're still going to be behind in performance albeit at a lower price. It is difficult to find good benchmarks, but i'm not even sure if AMD's current stuff can provide better performance on a dollar for dollar basis which is part of the reason they are in so much financial trouble.

if you remember back to the good days for AMD (A64 & FX-5x intro & socket 939) their products were not cheaper than comparable Intel chips. when i bought my A64 3200, an FX-55 was crazy fast and cost over $1k. AMD pricing was nearly identical to intel, but at that time AMD had the better product (hypertransport, 64 bit support, etc.). If AMD does somehow bring a competitive high end chip to the table, i wouldn't expect it to be too much cheaper than the comparable Intel.

I think they overpriced it at launch, they know who ever wanted to buy it price be damned, already bought it by now... and lots of us went elsewhere to get it cheaper.

This thing is not meant to go much cheaper than $284, the entire marketing strategy about i7 for 2009 is
a. AMD has nothing to counter.
so
b. Release a permanently overpriced (in comparison) platform.

Thanks.. I took Brolloks' recommendation and got the Gigabyte Extreme X58 board.

330 + 10 for shipping. so 340 on Ebay. -30 for a coupon for november - 82 for Microsoft cashback = roughly $226

So for both the MB and the i7-920 it will be a total of about $460 (226 + 234)

You can't beat that with a stick!! i would urge anyone who is going to upgrade to give it a look.

Wow, that's strange. I got the cash back for the MB immediately in my paypal account. For the CPU, it said that it will take 60 days.

I find it strange you got your money so quick! I bought 2 4850's this past summer. The 1st one came up quick, but the 2nd I had to pester them about. This is just to see it in Live, though. I couldn't transfer any money for another 60 days, then it took 14 days for the money to show up in paypal, and another 4 days for it to clear the bank.

I doubt we'll see anything below $284 retail, any time soon.

Still $10 to go to reach that point :).

When will LGA 1336 and DDR3 drop in price?! I'd jump all over the i7s if they could just be a bit cheaper.

You mean LGA 1366. It will not.

It is a permanently overpriced platform.

I found a 6 GB kit of OCZ gold 8-8-8-24 1.65V for 159.99 on Amazon. I bought 2 kits, posted it here and within like 5 minutes, they upped the price to 199, then some time later 245.

I guess someone there screwed up with the pricing.

Or increase in demand / realisation that they set price too low.

Edit : does that live.com work with UK users? I cannot seem to find the ebay link which says about a 20% discount, I really want it for the Core I7 965 :(
