I'll probably get pummeled for this statement but it seems to me that folks are getting better and more consistent overclocking results, as well as fewer headaches when they match AMD CPUs with AMD chipsets.

With the K10-based CPUs (Phenom I and newer) that seems to be true but it really doesn't apply to K8's. If anything the nVidia chipsets work better for them ...

From my experience some board and cpu combos will absolutely scream when overclocking, and some just plain wont do it.

I've got an M2N-32 SLI Deluxe Board (Good Overclocker in General)
and a Black Edition AM2 CPU, and I can't even get a 200MHZ Stable overclock for the life of me, and both of these components were specifically designed to be overclockable as hell.

Overclocking is an art in my mind. (One that I have yet to master)
