Well, it's past the deadline.. it's 12:37 EDT on Oct 1st... and to tell you the truth, I thought there would have been more entries in this contest. I was participating, but I moved, started a job, and am moving again, so I have no time to collect spyware. There are some impressive ones though.

We'll see what our judges have to say..

Most of it isn't actually "running". If you look, 101,000 of it is Netsky. Netsky just copies itself to different folders on your drive, program folders, system folders, whatever. It does spy on you and it accesses the internet, but its not a processes really, kinda hard to explain. It just takes up hard drive space, and it does slow your computer down, just not much (in my experience it wasn't really that bad).

There was a ton of netsky, yes i know. one thing i did know was about the "shar" exploit. so what i did was choose an additional mounting point for C:\.. basicaly so netsky saw a shared directory and copied itself into it, but the share directory was really C:\ root. :D tricky, but it worked. the only problem being it caused a few system locks, so i took the mount point off after netsky was all over the place.

i still had over 9,900 real spyware on there, and it was impossible to keep booted properly. what i had to do every time i wasnted to boot was go into safe mode, use a program to uninstall the BHO's from IE's usability (they were still there actually, just not in the right part of registry to be BHO's), disable all start processes, and some services that the programs installed (.NET Framework.. hmm.. nope, didnt install that and its not microsoft). and then i could boot in and install more spyware. all in all when the spyware was running, it was constantly installing more stuff, and yes it brought my 2.3Ghz machine to its knee's. I almost lost a harddrive over it because they were working so hard on swapfile that it almost dumped on me halfway through.

But i managed, and lifeguard tools says A-oK so, im groovy.

basicaly, i spent more time keeping the system to default xp install that it was very hard to install more spyware. infact, in the end, active X was dead, and not working anymore.

VMware image is deleted, i look forward to seeing who the judges pick :)

Impressive, I'll have to take a look, make a list, then review those one by one... Expect to hear back within a week. I thought there might be more, but nice job to those who participated! :D

Joel looks like a likely candidate... :D But I will be taking the time to look at everything closer, this weekend maybe. Definetly will name some names within a week though. ;)

I've looked at things... I'm waiting to get in contact with Joe before I announce anything. ;)

Haven't forgetten about anyone. :)
