Who is still using winxp and plans to continue after the April cut off?

30% of win installs are still XP - I don't think they want to turn off that user base completely.

XP is great, their best OS imo. But it really is time to move on.

With 7, you only give up

XP has a better search function (hey little doggy!)
XP uses WAY fewer resources
XP has no UAC (not a problem in 7, but in 8 you can only turn it off 100% with a registry hack)
Can't rearrange files everywhere on the screen like you can in XP. (Very useful for organizational purposes, grouping like files and folders)

Pretty much it.

The search part sucks the most.

I am using 8.1 on all my computers, and I have to say I like it for the most part. It handles memory better than 7 did, also seems resources are always available. As for the UAC, in 8.1 it is accessible from the control panel.
Some people don't like change, but I have been a beta tester for Microsoft since the first version of windows. I was also a beta tester for Borlund at the time and they had just released Turbo-C++.
It has been a journey to get here, but well worth it. The first computer I programmed was an IBM 370 with 64K of ram. It was about 1 city block in size and we used punch cards and a terminal to communicate. That was when COBOL was the language of the future; the same one everyone thought was going to cause Y2K.

Have a great day...

Next time you fill out a Windows Beta report, greg2601, would you include a request to allow us to turn auto arrange OFF so we can move and group our files/folders anywhere on the screen [this is *crucial* for some people's for work] And a GUI Windows XP type Search program should be requested too. Maybe ask your friends to do the same when they fill out their Beta feedback reports.

Microsoft's actions don't really matter, it's when they stop writing new software for XP that will hit us. Not being able to get a current browser & medial player is the main reason my old machines DO have XP instead of 98...

XP is all around a great OS. Rock solid like 2000, but somehow seems a little quicker on a capable machine. Anything with 256 MB - 2 GB of RAM I'd throw XP on with confidence, and just limit activity on untrusted internet sites.

Sure. A lot of the press have been reporting it with out the details so a lot of people have misunderstood.

I just caught Windows 8 missing a search hit yet again. I rebooted into Windows XP and it found what I was looking for, without indexing, fairly quickly.

I ditched Win 7's indexing crap. So useless, it never found any of my files. (It only indexed 400 files, I have over 500,000)

I use: http://locate32.cogit.net/

Great tool, never misses any files, and you can set-up key macros/bindings.
I set mine to "Windows key" + F2 :D

Yea I tested a few of them and found this one to be most useable: http://mythicsoft.com/page.aspx?page=download&type=agentransack

But it certainly is ridiculous that we have to resort to this. Windows 7/8 Search Engine is extremely powerful with lost of options. So powerful yet so useless. Not only is it unreliable but how many of us actually know what to type in to take advantage of it?

Where is Windows 7's equivalent of this Windows XP screen:

/EDIT 1/
How about just covering the Windows XP basic searches in Windows 7, here's what to type in Windows 7 here:

To look for something specific, be sure to add asterisk * before and after search term and * as an extension.

For example, if searching for a + sign:
Enclose the plus sign(s) within asterisks, for example *+*.*, *++*.*, *+++*.*, etc., and make sure to either add an asterisk as the extension, or include a known extension like *.jpg for example.

Code:
Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/technicalresources/advquery.mspx

Once you have Windows Search for Windows Vista or Windows XP, you might be wondering how you can be even more efficient when it comes to finding files and e-mail on your PC. Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) can help you do just that. Using AQS, you can quickly define and narrow your searches for even more targeted results.

You can narrow your searches using a variety of keywords, or search parameters, which can restrict your query to specific locations, specific file types or properties within those types, or specific "file kinds." File kinds are displayed at the top of the Windows Search Explorer, accessible by pressing the Windows Logo key + F.

To match a specific string literally, without it being interpreted as a keyword, you can use double quotation marks. Words in a search query entered between quotation marks are matched exactly, in the order they were entered.

The example tables below give you an overview of syntax that can be used with Windows Search 4.0, Windows Vista, or Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP, including the properties that can be added to your search terms to narrow and refine your results.

author:name
author:patrick
Finds items with patrick in the author property.

author:(name)
author:(patrick hines)
Finds items with patrick in the Author property.

author:(name OR name)
author:(patrick OR bob)
Finds items with patrick or bob in the Author property.

author:name name
author:patrick bob
Finds items with patrick in the Author property and bob anywhere in the document.

from:name
from:patrick
Finds items with patrick in either fromName OR fromAddress, since "from" is a property name for both fromName and fromAddress.

before:date
before:10/9/2007
Finds items whose PrimaryDate field contains a date before 10/9/2007.

after:date
after:10/9/2007
Finds items whose PrimaryDate field contains a date after 10/9/2007.

has:attachment
report has:attachment
Finds items containing the word report that have attachments. Same as hasattachment:true

is:attachment
report is:attachment
Finds items that have attachments containing the word report. Same as isattachment:true

Numbers and ranges
To specify a date range, type the property followed by two dates. For example, type from:david sent:11/05/06..11/05/07. Windows Search recognizes all Windows date formats and also recognizes the following values:
Relative dates: Today, tomorrow, yesterday
Multi-word relative dates: week, next month, last week, past month, or coming year. The values can also be entered contracted, as follows: thisweek, nextmonth, lastweek, pastmonth, comingyear.
Days: Sunday, Monday ... Saturday
Months: January, February ... December

Size and date ranges
	Syntax	Results

size:>50KB <70KB
Searches for files with a value in the Size between50 KB and 70 KB, excluding the end values.

size:>=50KB <=70KB
Searches for files with a value in the Size property between 50 KB and 70 KB, including the end values.

size:50KB..70KB
Same as size:>=50KB <=70KB

date:>2/7/05<2/10/05
Searches for a date in the Date property between the values 2/7/05 and 2/10/05, excluding the end dates.

date:>=2/7/05<=2/10/05
Searches for a date in the Date property between the values 2/7/05 and 2/10/05, including the end dates.

date:2/7/05 .. 2/10/05
Same as date:>=2/7/05<=2/10/05

Note: on Windows Vista and higher, search syntax supports dates in the user’s current calendar. A query can use any of the formats defined in their Regional Options.

Common file properties
The terms listed in the preceding table can be used with any of the following file properties. For example, to find e-mail from "patrick" that was sent in 2008, your query would look like this: kind:email author:patrick after:12/31/2007.

I have an old PC and an old laptop. Both have the original XP Product Keys in the back (or side). They both activated on the first try. But having used Win 7 for a while now I find XP a bit awkward. Didn't think so when there was no 7. Don't see any point hanging on to XP unless you originally got it with your computer.

I would have thought so except; After helping with a roomies pc, it needed 139 updates and had no av whatsoever, now the stupid thing says "you may be a victim of software piracy", when I know and he knows it was bought brand new. It actually did that during the update process itself and said we could buy win 7 for $150. I bumped his ram to 2gigs from, get this, 256mb-lol, and when his used 2.4ghz dual core processor shows up (he has a 1.8 now), we'll also put win 7 64 in. Needless to say I need to stop helping complete retards who own pc's. I could remove the annoying and permanent nag wgatray thing but just more work.
I see no point in keeping xp unless you are either lazy or it is simply not possible to get win7. Undoubtedly MSE will sooner or later stop working in xp as well.

You are looking at it from the point of view of having only one OS. Why have only one? Some of us make relatively small SSD partitions and keep WinXP installed on one and have Win7 or Win8 on another one. That way when, (not if), when something goes wrong, we can reboot into WinXP and deal with it. Not to mention having the ability to use old hardware and software with a simple reboot into WinXP, if we need to.

Well here is a point you may have missed. If you have multiple machines using xp, then to move to another Win OS is going to cost you $100 a machine ($1000 for all my machines). You don't get $1000 worth of value if you are only using the machines to do basic tasks like word processing and spreadsheet and some surfing and making a bunch of power point slides or picture albums for grandma.

It's pretty annoying that M$ created such a holey OS that it has to be security patched in the thousands and still its full of flaws as yet undiscovered. Whats even more amazing is the number of patches for 7 and 8 still flowing out like sticky goo.

Exactly, it is much harder to fix 7 and 8 with their hidden partitions.

The April date is fast approaching - better get your updates before they start showing the message - its all over, upgrade or be left behind....
