Do CPUs run cooler on 64bit vs 32bit?

I just installed Win7 Ultimate 64bit (from XP 32bit) on an SSD and my CPU is running about 5 degrees cooler (idle).

Anyone else experience this?

hmmm. let me just share my experience..

my only experience, is that I find my CPU much less 'noisey' under Win7 comparing to XP. so maybe it doesn't have much to do with 32 v 64 bits, but rather it is win7 vs XP?

under XP, my CPU always have a 3-5% work load even in idle.
under w7, my CPU can have as low as 0-3% work load in idle.

any specs you can share so we can all do observational learning? :)

Keep in mind I built this system 6yrs ago lol

AMD 939 Opteron 175 @ 2.6GHz
ASUS A8R32-MVP Deluxe
2GB Corsair DDR 400
Sapphire HD 4870X2 (upgraded a few years ago)
Seasonic 860 Platinum (just upgraded)

I changed too many things to actually know which one resulted in the lower idle temps.
1) Failing OS HDD
2) New OS/SSD
3) 32bit to 64bit
