c0nfusion - no matter how many precautions you take, hardware can still be damaged enough to die during transit. Most probably what happened is that during transit, vibrations from the road, a light bump, or just plain g-forces from turns probably loosened or disconnected some small part on the board and when you went to turn it on... *poof*.

It happens. Sucks a lot, but it does happen. There is still a chance the board is still saveable. Make sure nothing on the board is loose and that there are no gaps between components and board. Ensure that the capacitors are still in good shape and not leaking. Make sure the board is still stiff and doesn't flex too easily (lots of flex is signs of motherboard with broken strata, which usually = bad).

Follow up: I just received my new MSI 790FX-GD70 mobo in the mail and - it turns out - we were right. It was the motherboard. Everything is up and running now, RMA'ing the Gigabyte board.
