The braided copper cabling is much cheaper than solid copper and it usually has a smooth, shinny sheathing. How to easily tell; bend the wire at a 90 degree angle, solid copper will stay bent and braided with snap back.
Yep I get the solid copper stuff for .11 cents a foot!

I bought some cables from MonoPrice.com. Bags were label as "Stranded".

Standed should be fine, as I do not plan on overclocking the cables.

I used to know where to get 250ft of Cat6 with tool and ends...for 14.44. I can't remember where it was tho...but monoprice is great, thanks for posting that site!

GOOD LORD!!! Their prices are insanely cheap. i had considered offering Cat5e custom made cables in the Classifieds but I couldn't touch that with a 10ft pole. :bang head
even though their pre-made patch cords are braided copper rather than solid copper.

Unfortunately, now it seems the Monoprice.com shipping and handling is quite high, it seems to have increased by about 65 percent. Purchasing from a merchant like Newegg may be cheaper.

I now restate the original question posed, with modification:

Where may cheap Category 5e cable be attained?

Surprisingly the Home Depot doesn't have bad prices. I think its like $3-4 for a 7 foot cable.

I highly recommend Deep Surplus. We have used literally hundreds of patch cables from them and so far we haven't even had a single bad one, and the prices are way cheap too. Fast shipping as well. Really good experiences so far.

Know what's sad? The damn tool to add connctors costs as much as a cable. I had a connector lose its tab and wanted to replace it only to find the crimping tool was $15-20 versus a cable at $5-10. I just 'rented' a tool from Home Depot by returning it (ssh) it just bothers me how throwaway things have become.

Actually in this case Parts Express is cheaper than monoprice even, by a good bit. 20 foot Cat 5e for $2.78, gray or blue

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=109-481

Also 25 feet for the same price, available green and yellow:

Monoprice is cheap, but they want $1.14 more per cable, Parts Express wins..

Cheapest shipping on the $20 foot Belkin is $6.30 for me.

Good company though.

Yeah I didn't check shipping. Just did though. For 10 of the 20' cables, shipping here is just under 10 bucks, 30 bucks shipping for 50 cables.. Not too shabby, unless he's just price shopping for a single cable which doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me :p

this site is so cheap. I was looking at a DVI connector for my 360 just to clear up some clutter (college dorm) and it wasnt worth more than 15 bucks to me, but monoprice has a 6' gold plated connector for 8.36 shipped to me

this site should be stickied.

Even with shipping Parts Express may be cheaper than Monoprice for few quantities.
