When I try to access the CD-ROM on my old computer (pentium 1, made by compaq), I get a message that says "the drive is not ready". Please help.

Believe you can view the drive in Windows - My Computer.

So, first check the media - if it's a newer CD burned at a higher speed, sometimes older drivers cant read it. So take a "printed" CD (not a CDR or CCDRW) and try it out.

Since its an old probably drive, the lens might be dirty. U can clean it with a cleaning CD (but don't spend too much on that, you can get a burner under $40.

Better is that take out the CD-ROM drive from you system and pop the top cover. Then clean the lens with a q-tip.

If nothing works, it's time for you to gift yourself a brand new optical drive.
