Which brand?
I've narrowed it down to Hercules and Leadtek.
Leadtek says it has hardware monitoring. Do the Hercules boards have this? Is it any good?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of each brand?

The Hercules overclocks nicely... Altough I've seen some that can be clocked to 240 (core) and memory doesn't go as high as mine. Memory is the main bottleneck of the MX, so you want one that can get the memories high.

Also, DO NOT buy a DDR MX, as it has half the buswidth compared to the SDR MX, which has 128bits. And according to tests I've seen, the DDR MX is slower, due to some DDR-latency stuff.

A buddy of mine has Leadtek GF256 DDR... Quite nice, but needs a better HS and doesn't oc well. I'd go for a MX rather than a DDR GF1.

But most importantly, buy a brand name.

huh?
benchmarks show that DDR is faster!

i think...
