How to attach heads onto bare fan leads?

I have a bunch of fans with some bare leads, and I cut some of the wires to a nice appropriate length, but I couldn't seem to get the fans to work. I stripped the wires and I have these 3-pin kits, with the 3-pin head and some larger metal pins that fit into the header. Anyone have a tutorial on how to use these things? I couldn't get the few I tried to function.

usually black is ground, red is power, and yellow is a the signal wire- is that how you wired them?

Yes I have the wiring order correct. I guess I just clamped them too much.
