my laptop is not infested with any viruses or spyware. media player simply gets stuck running in the background and it wont allow me to shut down the computer without prompting me to close the program because of this.

well it sounds like you have spyware on your computer so i'd do this for that

fresh install and dont run IE, except for windows updates (and you can run those by manual dl through firefox if you really want)

But if you just want to fix issue, accually now that i think about it, i got the same issue when I install sp2 with my laptop, I remember the reason was that the laptop was loading something and couldnt respond fast enough, the it would close MP down but the sound kept coming as if the movie was still playing. I remember I cleaned up some stuff so that it runs faster and the problem went away.

If your getting pop up's then you have spyware, I have firefox and not a single pop up! Oh and it runs launch.com too *smirks* at the emperor
