The 1K question!

Hello there!

After selling some of my older junk, I finally mustered some cash for a new Conroe build - I need CPU, MOBO and Memory. Here is what I have narrowed down to:

E6600 - any vendor - around $315

Abit AW9D Max - If I can find one - $261 or so.

Team PC2 8000 2gb - $345

Opinions? Different RAM? Remember, 1k budget shipped.

I am going to overclock this thing - cooled by Apogee, BIP3 and D4. My goal is to hit 3+ ghz if possible (I know results vary a lot)

Any info is appreciated!

I see that you have chosen an E6600 and you will be overclocking on water. To me, that tells me youre serious about overclocking and you will be needing a motherboard that will give you solid FSB results to run 1:1 with the great ram you got there. I would highly recommend a P5B-Deluxe Wifi mobo as most of them will run to 450+ FSB right out of the box, 480 to 500 FSB with some tweaking of the bios, and 500+ with better cooling.

This is all assuming you are really serious about high overclocks and a 1:1 memory setup.

3GHz will be cake. I would get DDR800 so you can possibly run 1:1. 1:1 gives the best performance when you get to around 800MHz DDR, that is 400FSB.

So what you're saying is that I will be better off with something like PC2 6400 with better timings than a faster ram with more relaxed timings?

Thanks for the quick responses BTW - Dominick, I will end up getting the Asus board - no one seems to have the Abit.

i would go with the

Gskill DDR2 800mhz "HZ" modle.... AMAZING stuff i use it in combination with my E6600 on my P5W DH and its amazing.... im just waiting for a cool day so i can do 4ghz 445x9

BUT i would get a P5B Deluxe.... seems like ur gonna have way good cooling so the more fsb you can get the better.... i had to put AS5 and a 40mm fan on my board and it is maxed out at 445.... a p5b on the other hand looks at 450 like nothing... then you add a 40mm fan and some as5 to the main chipset hs... and ull probably be able to get 500fsb no prob.

and as for overclocking the e6600 will do 3ghz a 25% oc on its stock volts no prob... considering i can do 3.960ghz with an ultra 120 and a yate loon... im sure you will get 4 ghz + sucide runs and mabey even around 4ghz stable 24/7 oc... probably more like 3.8ghz 24/7 stable

OH and BTW if someone with a P5W DH is being FSB limited.... max out the ICH voltage... YES ICH... i was hittin a brick wall at 435fsb... now im almost positive i could do 450fsb.

its amazing stuff... will do 1000-1066mhz at 2.15v at stock 4-4-4-12 timings... and WOW im glad i bought mine 2 months ago... it was 60 bucks cheaper.

You just want Micron D9GMH the DDR2 can be 677 it will all overclock pretty much the same.

like these are equivelent but out of stock right now.

yep...love my set to bad my early ab9-pro only has 2.3vdimm. im sure i could get ddr2-1200@5-5-5-16 stable with 2.4vdimm. well either that or my board is flaky since it is a early one. as the max fsb i am able to get no matter what is 395mhz.

Personally, I think the Abit AW9D-Max is a perfect match for the E6600. Check out my signature, you'll be able to run well over 3 gig no problem. Just update to the latest BIOS version after you get up and running with all the drivers installed. DDR2-1000 RAM is probably overkill. Just get some good DDR2-800 RAM with D9 chips. Hard to beat the G. Skill "HZ" or this Team (see link).

Keep in mind with DDR2 800 you'll get 400MHz FSB running 1:1, which is 3600Mhz for the E6600, IMO unless you plan on running far over 4Ghz (which is 445 FSB), DDR2-1000 is overkill.

crucial 10th annyversary edition is also D9GMH (its Ballistix with a different heatspreader)

The DH has a lower FSB overclock limit, but slightly better ram performance.

The P5B-Deluxe has memory sub-timings to tweak in the bios to help make up of the ram performance difference and higher FSB overclocking.

I think it depends on your goals, if you want to bench 4Ghz the DH can make that tricky, But if your goal is 3.6Ghz or less 24/7 then the DH would be more then fine.
The P5B-Deluxe will make benching easier, Dry ice, phase, cascade, LN2 what have you.
