Title doesn't say whether you mean a SATA controller or SATA drive. BTW, IDE can mean SATA or PATA. 
Look for an adapter based on a Marvell chip (slanted "M" logo). I have a 2-way adapter based on a Sun Plus chip that's unreliable with SATA hard drives and doesn't work at all with any type of optical drive, but it's fine with PATA hard drives.
