Hey guys,

Basically as the title says, I'm looking for two fans to replace the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

I've decided on this cooler as it's a good price, I've heard nothing bad about it and, the nearest price I can find an independent water cooler, is £80, where as this is £26.

I do plan on OC'ing my CPU to 4.5GHz as I hear that is a good GHz to OC the i7 3770k.

Anyway, if someone could suggest two fan's that would be great.
My case if massive, so fan size is no matter.

Your fan size does matter. The Max the evo can take is two 120mms. Frankly that heatsink doesn't benefit THAT much by going push/pull. I'd look at a single Noctua NF F12 or Corsair SP120 fan. Or my preferred gentle typhoon GT AP-15. If you can find one. Either way to get a decent fan replacement especially in push/pull you'll be spending at least the same if not more as you did on the cooler itself.

Also a 212 evo might not handle an i7 3770k at 4.5 depending on the voltage required. Not keeping good temps anyway. (Depending on what you consider good temps)

I just had a look at fans. Found both the Corsair SP120 (2 for £25) and the Syth Gentle Typhoon (1 for £13) going for the same price.

Hmmm, just saw your edit. I don't really know what to consider good temps. I'm new to the whole overclocking, temperature game. As far as I know, the lower the better.

Right now, my thoughts are, if an 212 Evo with two fans is going to cost £50. I might be better off going for an independent water cooling system for the CPU for around £80...
(Conversion from £ > $ is £10 > $15)

Slap a ultra kaze on it, or if you're not bothered about noise (I mean NOISE) then get a Nidec VA450, I use these for benching as there a bit noisy, infact ther rediculously noisy but the power of them is a world apart from the other fans, and I've seen them on eBay for as little as £8

Ok, if they don't preform much better, then I'll definitely scrap an independent water cooling system.

So what do you suggest then in terms of a CPU Cooler then, if not the 212 Evo?

Hey Kenny, right, seems like you both suggest the Ultra Kaze. The Nidec isn't for me, noise is a major factor, as this will be sitting in my and my girlfriends livingroom in the near future. On top of that it is on 24/7 and I tend to sleep in the same room as my computer.

So far the suggested fans are:

Noctua NF F12
Corsair SP120
Gentle Typhoon GT AP-15
Ultra Kaze

Price is not so much of a concern, so much as performance and noise.

Also, if you have a better suggestion than the 212 Evo, please let me know.

Apparently the Kaze is loud. So that is now out.

Wait. You haven't bought the evo yet? Sorry I thought you had already ordered it or something. Could be a couple other options then.. I'm not home at the moment but when I get home I'll check a couple others that might be viable.

Edit. I'd go the nzxt havik 140. Bare in mind it's a tall heatsink. If your case has side panel fans you might have issues. But definitely go the havik over the hyper 212 evo and new fans.

After using a corsair h60 SE. I'd stick to air honestly. I'd go the havik. But that's my opinion. Check graphs and reviews to see what's worth your money.

Agree with Mjolnir. Stick with air.

If you plan to overclock and like thing cool and quiet get the biggest that will fit and you can afford. With 140mm fans make sure your RAM is short enough to clear cooler (<47-52mm) RAM height + fan size is mobo to side cover clearance. Add 8mm to case's CPU cooler clearance for mobo clearance. Add 3mm to RAM height for RAM to mobo size.

NZXT Havik 140 for £30.00 in clearance. Make sure you can fit a 160mm tall cooler in your case.

If you want the best there's a white Phanteks TC14PE for £54.99 Spec says 171mm tall but I have one in a R2 case with 165mm (fans can be slipped down). Cooler fins are 50mm above mobo.

and Alpenfohn K2 are on special this week for £54.99 (bottom fin is 51mm above mobo)

Woah, how on earth did you find these?
I've been looking for ages to no avail for a decent priced cooler.

The case is huge, it'll fit a big sized CPU cooler no bother.
I don't understand the measurements you gave... But I'm sure it'll fit.

This is the Ram I have.

And this is the Mobo.

I read that the Alpenfohn K2 needs low profile ram.
I don't know, what do you think? I don't understand the measurements. But whatever one you suggest, I'll just buy today.

Thank you so much for helping me btw :)

Your RAM will not fit under any cooler I know to man. Those heat spreaders are are 52.5mm tall plus 3mm RAM slot makes them 55.5mm above the surfae of motherboard.

To fit a 120mm fan over them you need at least 176mm from motherboard to side cover.

A 140mm fan will need 196mm from motherboard to side cover.

Do you have the motherboard where you can make some measurement?
Need to know distance from center of CPU to RAM. With this measurement we can find out if the Nzxt Havik 140 will fit between RAM and CPU.

Would also help to know how tall the silver heatsinks to the back and above CPU socket are. I'm hoping less than 40mm.

Most coolers have 50-55mm between bottom fin and motherboard.

Only other options are to get different RAM or take the heat spreaders off of your Vengeance. This has been done many times. There are tutorials on doing it on youtube and on forums.

I don't think we can figure this all out for ordering today. :)

ASRock Z77 Extreme6 is on Phanteks compatibility list :)
If Phanteks PH-TC14PE will fit, so will Alpenfohn K2 will fit too.
http://www.phanteks.com/Compatibility.html#LGA1155_ASRock

Cooler size list I put together.
Cooler size comparison (Width x Depth x Height looking from front of case with motherboard laying flat)
K2 . . . . . .= . . . . 8x 6mm pipes 140x128x158mm 146x154x160mm w/ 120mm & 140mm PWM fans 43.2mm*
D14 . . . . .= . . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x130x160mm 140x158x160mm w/ only 2011 has PWM fans 44mm*
TC14 . . . . .= . . . 5x 8mm pipes 140x134x160mm 140x159x171mm w/fans, PWM adaptor included 40-45mm*
Silver Arrow . = . 4x 8mm pipes 147x123x163mm 151x149x168mm w/Fans 40.87mm*
SA SB-E . . . .= . . 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 170x130x170mm w/ 140mm & 150mm PWM fans 31.9/39/46mm**
SA SB-E Extreme 8x 6mm pipes 155x105x164mm 155x130x165mm w/fans Reason it's smaller is 140mm fan vs 150mm fan.
HE01 . . . . .= . . . 6x 6mm pipes 140x119c160mm w/ 140x38mm PWM fan
Dark Rock Pro .= 7x 6mm pipes 133x124x166mm 133x149x166mm w/ 120mm & 135mm PWM fans
*cooler base to bottom fin. (add 8mm for motherboard to bottom fin.)
**fins are at 3 different levels

K2, D14 & TC14 are about same except for TC14 140mm fans & 31mm RAM clearance stack up to 171mm (my R2 is 165mm clearance and TC14 fits)

SB-E is widest by 15mm. Even wider with TY-150 fan = 170.

Extreme with TY-143 fans is still 151.5mm wide.

you have pm

Right, I've measured up.
Distance from the center of the processor to the ram is 55mm.
Height of ram is 55mm.
The little heatsinks are about 30-35mm.

Overall clearance from the center of the processor to the surrounding heatsinks, ram, etc is 55mm, just! Maybe a few millimeters less.

I'm leaning towards the Havik 140. It's £30, and I wanted to get another 3 fans for my Pc which would set me back £42 just for them.

Good, the motherboard heatsinks are not a problem with any normal cooler.

NZXT website says Havik 140 is 120mm front to back.. that's 60mm from center of PU. But they say the cooler is 60mm (1/2 is 30mm) + 25mm fan is 55mm... so we have 5mm discrepancy. And if their 120 spec is correct your tall RAM is 5mm too close for fan to fit. :(

Your Corsair Vengeance RAM is too tall for many cooler/fan combinations. There are a few coolers that will fit.

Thermalright True Spirit 120M but don't know how has them in stock
Thermalright Macho HR-02 = £38.03 @ Scan & £39.98 @ OcUK
Macho%20Rev.A.png

Thermalright True Spirit 140 £39.95 @ OcUK will fit but the stock fan clips might not. Half of cooler is 27 and fan is 26.5mm so 53.5mm from center of CPU fits.. fan clips stick out in front of fan.
TS-140%20side.jpg

Can you use other RAM slots and not the one closest to CPU? Than the Havik 140 would fit fine. That, remove RAM heatspreaders, or use different cooler.
HR-02 will fit.
TR 140 will fit with possible fan clip problem.. can use pull-ties to make chips or modify the clips.

Havik 140 52.4c; 27.4-43.5dBA
Macho HR-02 53.3c; 24.9-38.6dBA
True Spirit 140 54.9c; 25.8-39.7dBA
http://www.rwlabs.com/article.php?cat=&id=545&pagenumber=6

Havik 140 is best value (£10 cheaper) and 1c better cooling.. but HR-02 is quieter.

HR-02 needs Philips screwdriver or 5.5mm nutdriver with 145mm of shaft to reach one mounting screw. I've mounted a few and can suggest a couple of tricks to simplify mounting. ;)

Oh, I could move the ram! I never even thought of that. I've got 4 slots, so I could move them over.
Would that not reduce the efficiency of the ram though? I've always heard that you should have them as close to the CPU as possible. I don't know if this is still accurate though, what with the progression of motherboards since I was last in the computer building game.

If it's a difference of £10, I'm fine with that. The Macho HR-02 looks like a good deal. Only 0.9c hotter while 2.5db quieter.

Right, this is how I will decide. If moving the ram will not effect efficiency, then I'm going with the Havik 140. If it will effect efficiency, then I'm going with the HR-02.

What say ye?

Thanks for talking me through all this btw, it is much appreciated. :)

That sounds like a plan.

You motherboard manual should have the info on RAM placement.

Some reviews say HR-02 with 1 or 2 fans is better than the Havik 140 ;)

You could get a second fan. The TY-147 fan is an exceptional fan and at £5.87 it's about half price. If you need any fans it's very good. All fans in my system are the same basic fan.. TY-140 is same except for color and TY-143 for £8.40 is same except for color and bigger motor with ball bearings.. Same noise level up to 1300rpm but if you wind it on up to 2500rpm it's louder. Just remember these are 140mm fans with 120mm fan mounts.. 105mm spacing.. and housing is 151x141mm.

Any other questions just ask.
