When is a RAID controller not a RAID controller? When it RAIDS what you don’t have.
If you are ordering a new motherboard for its RAID features, look very closely at what it’s RAIDing. A lot of new motherboards, on both the Intel and AMD side, feature RAID, but it’s RAID for serial ATA hard drives, not regular IDE RAID.
You may ask, “Can’t I just put adapters on my current hard drives and get RAID that way?” Yes, you can.
You may say, “So what’s the big deal about attaching adapters that come with the motherboard. . . .” Stop right there. They don’t come with the motherboard. Some hand you one, some hand you none.
“So what do these adapters cost?” About thirty dollars each.
So, for instance, if you want to RAID two current IDE drives to say, the A7N8X Deluxe, that will cost you sixty extra dollars, please. If it’s a board like the Abit NF-S, you’ll still need another one, and that will be thirty extra dollars, please.
