i like it because it scans through zip files and everyting..i had PC-Cillin b4 but it sucked...

I had both pc-cillin and avg(free edition v7)... avg found all the viruses pc-cillin could but not vice versa... it's a great anti-virus software... I don't like norton(mislabeled a program as spyware)... and it's script blocking thingy gets in the way with asp scripts...

avg blocks bat files for me sometimes... And it ended up being the reason I uninstalled it. Might have been my own fault for not figuring out how to configure it... But I never get viruses, so all I really want is something that is there, but I don't have to do anything with it. If my virus protection does that, I consider it a success.

Did you find an alternative that does exactly that; just being there?

My vote goes to NOD32. I havnt tried AVG yet so I can not comment on it. But I am going to stick with NOD32 until it fails me

Kaspersky..i like it because it scans through zip files and everyting..i had PC-Cillin b4 but it sucked...after i unistalled it and put kaspersky i found 4 virus pc cillin didnt find...my only complaint would be that it takes up too much resources...could anyone tell me how avg is on resources? it seems to be a popular one

I second that.

FSecure sucks the big one, and i mean CPU cycles and HDD performace.
My ISP gives out a free firewall/anti-virus package by FSecure and it just plain awful...

Anyhow, since it was free i though I would give it a try, so i load it on to my Mini-ITX 1GHz system. (Had AVG installed at the time) Then on a reboot, 2K blue screen...
So I load last good config, uninstall AVG and try again... 2K loads fine, but painfully slow, tried to tweak the visus scan options, but i couldnt do anything to help speed it up. It was just plain awful. So i turn on the Anti-virus portion, and the system is back to its same old self again.

If you havent tried FSecure, I would strongly recomend to stay away from that Lemon of a program

This poll should really have distinguished between AVG Free and AVG Anti-Virus; probably the majority of people here are using AVG Free for obvious reasons.
There's no way to tell exactly why anyone uses what from the poll itself.

Used AVG a while ago, and it worked pretty well, but it wasn't too good with updates, or maybe I didn't notice them much. Don't remmember if Norton found any viruses after AVG, but I think it was pretty clean..

Couldn't select any more options, the poll is limited to only so many options, and this is the max.

Despite people thinking AVG is effective, this site http://www.av-comparatives.org/ , says otherwise. Its not has effective as the other free one (Avast!)...In fact, AVG is least effective!

Both AVG and Avast! have free versions, so you can safely assume they use the same fundamental scanning/detection technologies as their paid variants...They ain't as effective as paid ones (Kaspersky, NOD32, etc)

See here.

(If it doesn't display right on Firefox/Mozilla, press refresh a couple of times)

Interesting to note...I've used NOD32 for more than 3 yrs...In the last 2 years, I have yet to see that red screen that SimGuy has posted.

I always get a little worried when evrything is fine for too long...I'm gonna try AVG and Avast! since I can't continue with subscription services and be able to upgrade all my PIII setups to Athlon64 and Opterons! ;)

Currently using PC-cillin 2005 (Internet Security Suite) . This is my first go with PC-cillin , but so far I like it . Lotta features (some not needed but nice to have none-the-less) and very nice easy to use interface . Program updates automaticaly and quite frequent (almost daily) .With everything turned on in PC-cillin , I can't even tell the apps running , so it uses very little resources . We'll see how things go in the next year (1 year subscription) as far as how well PC-cillin works reliably ; but I have no worries thus far and pretty confident I made a good choice . I purchase the full retail ver ( cardboard sleeve w/manel ) NOT oem from e-bay for a nice price of $25/shipped verses retail box for $50 . Future updates are only $15 a year which is an added plus and good bargin in my book.

I did try NOD32 but it always caused a lost internet connection after it was installed (as others have mentioned)

Never tried AVG yet , but may someday .

Others recently tried , Mcafee and Norton and very UN-happy with both . Panda seemed ok (trial ver) , but does not have the reputation og PC-cillin in catching viruses .

To end ... PC-cillin seems to be xint so far and at the price I paid , it was a steal/bargin .

I've evaluated both Avast! and AVG. (both free versions)

AVG :

Pros
* Very easy to work with. I only looked at the help file to see what their functions mean, do and what they're for.
* Nice and lean.

Cons
* Can't find any at the moment...I might run into some later.

Avast!

Pros
* Has specialised resident apps for various apps. (Messenging, HTTP, P2P, etc, etc).
* Has interesting "Chest" and data restore options. (IF all else fails, you can restore the file to original state).

Cons
* Its got too many specialised resident components. (bit bloaty, so disable the ones you do NOT need.)
* The webshield function seems problematic as it corrupts or stops some of my downloads (they're just regular downloads via browser!)
* Its interface (GUI) could be improved, and simpler. Its not very intuitive or well laid out.

If you're super paranoid...You can have both free AV products installed.
BUT you must disable "resident protection" on one of them.

ie : AVG with resident protection ON, Avaast! with resident protection OFF.
And vice versa.

I've learnt that, you can have multiple FREE products on one system (AV and anti-trojan), and its just as effective as a paid AV solution.

SO you can have an effective and free security solution. :)

F-prot is the free cutdown dos-version f-secure antivirus? As far as I know their antivirus (which I use) includes f-prot and kasparski.

Same here. I love the fact that only 2 processes run and since I don't go to crazy non righteous sites, the on demand scanner works fine.

Once you go BitDefender Pro you'll never go back...

Hmm...may have to check that out. What all do you get in the upgrade? Real time?
