FFDshow n00b needs help

So I've wanted to get FFDShow to upscale my DVDs and TV shows, but I really don't understand the AVS tutorial that is so often linked. I've just reformatted and I want to get it running again. I've got BTV 4.82 doing TV shows and PowerDVD for DVDs. Do I need any additional software besides FFDShow? I've never been able to get FFDshow to upscale my shows without making everything REALLY dark in comparison, since BTV can switch encoders ( or is it decoders? ). Little help?
