Belorsch,
Any chance you are attempting to run -configonly on a running instance of FAH? That might cause an error. This usually happens when someone selects a service install on their first trip through -configonly. After a service install, you have to run services.msc to stop the FAH client, then run -configonly, then restart the service. Just a thought.

Sorry Adak I won't be able to do that until tonight. If I remember correctly the log file just stop at configuring client. Event viewer has something about the faulting application and gives the client.exe and faulting module as ntdll.dll. The os is WinXP with sp3 with dot net 4. The last thing I did was run ms updates but I wasn't able to try again after that was done.

There's something VERY fishy about this set up! I'm anxious to tear into it and see what the hell has gone wrong here.

Ok how the heck do I post a log file? I hope I dont need a website to post it to lol.
This is from the i3 I was trying to do it on:

I don't know how much help those will be. I get the windows error, I click out of it and the client goes back to the dos prompt and I have to start all over again. It looks like the work that the q6600 was doing is still in here but I dont know if there is a way to get the client to refer back to it if you all can help me puzzle this out.
Here is the error that is in event viewer:
Faulting application fah6.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.6055, fault address 0x00010717.

Pick out one system you fold on, and let's concentrate on that ONE system, for now.

Make a restore point on that system, because we will be making some changes that could affect the system in general. Shouldn't of course, but you do need to be careful. Also, back up your registry.

I can't tell from your description what folding work was done. Best to let it go, in the interest of setting up a good folder.

Stop the folding client (ctrl+c), and go
start >> control panel >> administration tools >> services (local)

and look in your list it shows. Do you have a FAH or fah service listed there?
If you do, and it's running, let me know. If you don't have a fah listed, then cancel those windows, and back out of there, completely. Change nothing in there, atm.

Get your passkey, and copy it into a regular text only file, in your document directory. Name the file passkey.txt or anything else, but not fah or FAH in the first three letters, and keep it safely OUT of any fah directory or sub directory.

Let me know when that's done.

If you have a log file to post, especially if it's a long one, the forum can use scroll bars like this, IF you click on the # icon at the top of the advanced editor window, and paste you text, right where the forum puts your cursor.

Looks like this:

The above is from the new Version 7.1.48 client, and that's what I'd like to switch you over to - it's just a lot easier.

No, (maybe later). That was mainly for others who might be new and are now reading this thread.

Did you have any services listed as FAH or fah?

Good.

Next step: Remove all the old fah programs:

Start >> control panel >> programs (not default) but installed or change. Uninstall all listed FAH or fah programs listed in the program list.

There were none there. I did delete the folder that I was running the console client out of though.

Next:

Start >> Windows explorer >> search >> fah*

You shouldn't have any fah* files or folders, left. If you do, delete them, also. (OK, not if you work for Fahrenheit Inc., LOL). Just clear out any Folding@Home remnants, on the drive, anywhere.

Registry clean out is next, and here you have to be very careful.

If a registry key has ONLY fah references in it. Delete the key. BUT, if the key has ANY other references in it, just edit the key to remove the reference to fah, and leave the rest ALONE.

Start >> Run >> regedit >> edit >> search >> fah

Done and done. Thanks for the help so far but I need to get some sleep. Got to get up in 5 hours. I did find quite a bit in the registry for old clients in the programs folder.

For tomorrow, when you're rested:

Re-boot and let's see if all is well!

Go here and click on the download logo.

https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/FAHClient/

The first one listed is
fah-installer_7.1.48_x86.exe

and that's the one to get.

Download and save it. Then close your browser and go to windows explorer, and start that installer.

It will generally be able to pick out a good set up for folding on that rig. If not, we can change it.

Woot! Its up and seems to be running fine. Where does it place its work? I want to point HFM to it if I can.
