Ok building 2 new computers here one for me and one for the wife

I think the mobo will be a
GIGABYTE GA-X48T-DQ6 LGA 775 DDR3 Intel X48

now the E8500 $229.99 no fan 3.16GHz
the E8400 $185.99 no fan 3.0GHz

I do plan on all water cooled and wanted to play with some over clocking

with that said wouldn't it be worth going with the E8400 and OC it?

The E8500 has a x9.5 multiplier whereas the E8400 has a x9. Personally, I'd get the E7200. It has a x9.5 multi and is cheaper than both of those. Only trade off is it has half the L2 cache but that's not that big a deal imo.

whats different between the X48 and the P48

And I just notice something I have a P4 3.0G socket 775 it has Hyper-Threading Support

and the Exxxx do not lol what happened there?

I have my E8400 doing 4ghz on my Giga X38 DQ6 using only 1.34 volts. It has been steady like this for four months.

Well I was going with that X38 board because I had the Crossfire (16x - 16x)
most boards I see its like (8x - 8x)

Did you get the E7200 running 4ghz @ 1.4volts?

I don't believe I've heard of the P48 :-/. Why? It can do hyper-threading but they don't want to enable it.

woops I meant whats the difference between the P45 and the X48
lol I'm tired my head isn't screwed on right tonight

My guess is is that the difference in CPU oc capability depends on the layout. The main difference is x16 and x8.

Does the 8x pic-e slot really limit bandwidth with most reasonable cards? Eg. 4850 Crossfire?

I would choose the E8400 because both of the CPUs are prone to the luck of the draw when OCIng, and the E8400 is the cheaper of the two. In other words the 9X multi on the E8400 will not hold you back when OCing, and you could very well get higher OCs with it then on the E8500. Just as an example, my chip is perfectly stable at 4.2GHz which is higher than most E8500 OC to.

I think more importantly then e8400 vs e8500 is the x48 vs p45 debate.

Not trying to bring it to off topic but here we go.

notable differences: x48 vs p45
1) p45 is on a 65nm process x48 is on a 90nm process
2) p45 uses ICH10R southbridge where as the x48 uses ICH9R
3) for crossfire p45 does 8x/8x pci-e 2.0 where as x48 does 16x/16x pci-e 2.0
4) for quadfire p45 does 8x/8x/4x/4x pci-e 2.0 where as x48 does 16x/16x/8x/8x pci-e 2.0 IIRC

advantage and why
1)p45 pulls out on top here. actually power usage isnt much different but the smaller process allows for typically higher FSB on the p45 vs the x48. In otherwords more overclocking provided your cpu can take it
2)obviously the p45 is better here but not by much you prob wont really notice the difference of ICH10 v 9
3)at first look the x48 wins however 8x/8x pci-e 2.0 does not bottleneck 4870 crossfire performance at all (8x pci-e 2.0 basically = 16x pci-e 1.1a)
4)this is where the lane difference might benifit the x48 over the p45 but I dont know if there are really any reviews that compair quadfire setups out now

Basically the p45 is cheaper, generally clocks better, and actually wont bottleneck under 2 card crossfire setups even thought its not full 16x pci-e 2.0

also there is an august price cut scheduled for intel processors that might be pushed up to july 20th. On top of that the 4870x2 should be out in august which rumors have it is 10-15% faster then crossfire 4870 due to the side bridge which will be enabled on the 4870x2 but isnt on other rv770 baised cards.

If i where you I would build your wifes computer and use it to satisfy your tinkering needs till august and when you do build buy get the p45 over the x48. You could install and test your planed water cooling loop on her computer before moving it to your system. If you do wait till august you can get the e8500 for around current e8400 prices if past cuts serve as a lession, the 4870x2 will be out which should be better and cheaper then 2 4870's. Overall you get more performance for less $. But then again you cant wait forever if you really want to buy now go for it.

Very good, if accurate.

Indeed if accurate then sweet tho by the time I save enough for these 2 computers it will be September so I will wait and watch the market.

by then the e8600 might be out. If it is it would cost around what the e8500 currently sells for.

Also I forgot to add that pci-e 2.0 8x vs pci-e 2.0 16x does begin to show differences at 2560x1600 on 4870 crossfire systems but even then its not all that significant. However when your throwing down 2K+ on a system any minor change can be considered significant enought to shell out more. Basically you have to weigh p45 vs x48 depending on rez; which you should have enough time to do if your building in sept.

Yup thats what I have to figure on because I'm a glutton and seem to over size things lol so I need to build the rig that will have good FPS in games on a 24 inch LCD from ASUS.. I bought these babies one for me and one for my wife
came to find out our current cards/rig cant keep up with the 1920 x 1200 res lol
