I am trying to sell a CPU for my roommate in the classifieds sections and the question of stepping arose. I have heard this, but have no idea what it is.

here are some chip #'s for referance, could some one make sense of the steping thing.

I know the "A" means T-bird and "D" means Duron and then the next couple of #'s are the rated Mhz, but that's it....
what is the stepping and what does it mean

CHIP 1:
A1100AMS3B
AVHA010SPDW
94653660965
1999AMD

CHIP 2:
A1200AMS3B
AYHJA0134MPMW
KOO92230442
1999AMD

CHIP 3:
A0700AMT3B
AFFA0034UPCW
92365370187
1999AMD

CHIP 4:
A1000AMT3C
ARGA0123SPWW
1999AMD

Stepping as I understand it - and could be wrong... is the like the alpha bet - ''b'' isnewer than ''a''

so the newer the stepping - or letter combination then the better the chip!

but steppings like agoga, axia, ayhja - are the ones I always here about and can atest to the ayhja being a mean powerfull chip!

I belive the stepping code is just to keep track of where and when the cpu was made.

By the stepping u can tell when was the chip made, and the part that we call the stepping of whole the code on the chip are the 4-5 first letters of the second line and the first letter or num of the 3rd line.
So the first CPU's stepping would be AVHA "9" and so on
by those stepping u can make a pretty accurate estimate about the O/Cability of the proc too... like the AYHJA "K" seems to be a pretty good stepping ur good possibility to hit higher speeds than lets say my AXIA "9". that's only an example

any idea were i can find table or database were people have made these observations and show what stepping seems to yeild what result?

You left the third line out. It is the most important.

I always look for a stepping with a "letter" starting the third line.

Chip two looks good! ;)
