Why are 9800XTs still so damn expensive?

Right now they're hanging on the high $300s / low $400s, or only like 50 bucks less than the X800pro. In some cases, the prices are identical.

With the 256mb 9800pros coming down to the mid-200s, one would think that the XT would follow suit.

well if you don't mind rolling the dice.... sapphire 9800pros are being made with the r360 cores. I just got one for $199.00 at newegg.com. If you're lucky enough to get a new one with the r360 core you'll be getting a potential 9800xt with 128mb ram for half the price. Flashed mine to the new 9800xt 128mb ram bios with no problems. there's even a new bios with the overdrive and heat sensor without using atitool. See this link....

I don't think its a matter of being able to soft mod them, I think that since the new cards have come out, usually the older cards take a price drop. I don't think a 9800xt is worth 300-400 when you can get a x800 for 400 or a little more.

Well, the 9800XT now is pretty pointless. You can get twice the performance for the same, EVEN CHEAPER price :-/

True enough. This feels like the same deal with 9700 pros to me. As you know, the 9700 pros stayed at the same price for a long long time after 9800 pros came out and EVEN NOW, they are still about the same price as 9800 pros after the 9800 pros dropped down to about $200. The 9700 pros are not too far in performance from the 9800 pros though. The x800s on the other hand can easily beat the crap out of any 9800XT card overclocked to the moon and back so the price differential between these cards does truly feel ridiculous.

I personally don't see how they expect anyone to buy a 9800XT now with the x800s going for the same price or cheaper.
