I Have A Question, Do You Know The Answer?

I got this question a while back, and for the life of me, I don’t have an answer to it:

I have a question for you Ed. In my years of computer support, I’ve always
wondered why video cards are designed the way they are.

Wouldn’t it be more effective for the GPU to be on the reverse side,
allowing for larger heatsink/fan combos and allowing for the air to blow
down, which is much more natural?

I’m no engineer, but there might also be issues with weight stress on the
card, the fans and other problems that I may be overlooking.

The only guess I can venture is that you might rather have a GPU pointed towards the bottom of the case because if you had it the other
way around, you’d be blowing the hot air right in the direction of the CPU/North Bridge.

Does anybody who does this for a living know what the real reason for this is? Does anyone who doesn’t do this for a living but has a
link to a source of information on this know what the real reason for this is?
