XBit Labs reports that Antec has recently received a patent for LED fans, and is telling its customers not to sell anybody else’s.
This ought to make some lawyers’ day.
It’s unclear whether Antec wants licensing money from all those making these things, or wants to keep the field all to itself.
It’s even more unclear what Antec is going to do to deter others from making them or selling them (at least in the U.S.). Something tells me that somebody who has a factory making these things somewhere in China isn’t going to care too much about patents and is going to have to be made to care.
It’s probably safe to say that whatever happens, the cost is likely to go up. Before you start paying everyone’s lawyers, you may want to buy some sooner rather than later before the likely battle heats up.
