why is 1280x1024 more popular than 1280x960? i just read a lil while back that the first is not in the normal 1.33 aspect ratio and some ppl been wondering why the option not available in games.. (which i presume would cause the game to be squished a little or something of the sort..)
so.. whats up with that res over 960? i just set mine from 1024 to 960 cause i read it and i wanted to be in the perfect aspect ratio :)

actually the perfect ratio for the eye is 16:9, however w/ most monitors a 16:9 ratio would mean that half of the monitor will not be used. The optimal way to use your monitor is 4:3 which means 800x600 or 1152x864 or 1280x1024 and many more...:D there is no problem w/ 1280x960 but it is seldomly. It is important to choose a resloution that your monitor can handle@ a high refresh rate (at least 85, MUCH better 100+)

1280x1024 is 5:4 you mean 1280x960. I use the latter resolution because I'm use to 4:3, the former just looks too 'squashed'. I asked this question before (why 1280x1024 was a resolution) & someone said - The reason for 1280x1024 is because it fills up video card memory up to 4MB in 24 bits truecolor mode, which in the past was a huge video memory. 1280x960 only filled 3.5MB so people felt it was a waste of memory at this time when the most expensive cards had 4MB memory.

Who knows if this is the real reason?

Since we all remember 640x480, 1280x960 is a whole multiple and maintains the correct 4:3 aspect ratio. Your 4MB reasoning sounds plausible. I run my desktop at 1280x960 and any games that support that rez. You will find that 12x9 is just not supported very much.

ok i dont really understand the 4mb reasoning.. did they make that a res cause 4 megs was highest and they couldnt make a higher res? or just so that it would take up all of the video cards ram... ?
