I'm pretty sure I have the chipset drivers installed for my eVGA board and I believe they are the latest ones. But I will uninstall and reinstall them, give that a try.

Yes, my pc runs perfectly with 1 GPU, I have tested both cards individually, they run very

smooth, I tested them on COD4 since COD4 is famous with all those bugs and glitches.

It ran perfectly for hours. nVidia needs to solve this issue has been going on for a while

now.

!!! So what IS the real trouble maker here?? I'm not a btw soulz, does ur motherboard already have an on-board GPU apart from ur 2x8800GTX ?? Just gathering info if this is unique to motherboards already having an on-board GPU... but then i wonder if there are any motherboards these days that dont have an on-board GPU!

btw at guru3d.com I still cant find 168.2 drivers... while there are 163.xx,169.xx and 165.xx....

Anyways i shall try the 163/165 set this week. currently its running 169.21 win xp32. Movies have been playing well..

i dont have a spare PC to try out the 8600GT card on :(

My motherboard doesn't have an on-board GPU. The real trouble maker is

the nvlddmkm.sys error that pops up when SLI is enabled.

u r lucky Soulz9! atleast u can afford to play now with one card.

i have the m2nmx se Asus board which doesnt even have SLI... and even with one card i get this error!

Thanks to your analysis with the cards in isolation.. which means both ur cards are perfectly alright. Hence i guess even my card might not have a problem :)

btw... why dont u guys try XP if u are facing this issue in vista ?? Ofcourse i've had the NVL error on both XP and Vista!

i am not any expert in PCs.. but i couldnt find much of a difference between DX10(vista 32) and DX9(xp 32) for Crysis... maybe becoz i can run them only at med setting ??

What GPU do you have? did you try updating your drivers? and before installing the latest OEM drivers, clearing your old drivers correctly?

Because I am really surprised that you are getting that error without SLI.

I would suggest try re-seating your GPU, and your RAM's just change them

around. It might be a PSU problem also.

Yep. tried all sorts of drivers (every time cleaning previous onez and restart) from 169.xx,170.xx,171.xx,178.xx,180.xx,181.xx on xp and vista. Have problem on both. btw.. i've never tried in safe-mode :) maybe thats the problem even though i've run driver cleaner in normal mode.
many ppl on this thread are having issues with single GPUs as well... i'm running a 8600GT XFX 512mb ddr2.

i've done the re-seating, removing/cleaning/single sticks etc for RAM - 667MHz DDR2

I think you should consider using Driver Cleaner or Driver Sweeper, since Driver Cleaner you have to buy it :(. Make sure you uninstall all the files using Driver Sweeper and go into your Control Panel and then Device Manager and uninstall the VGA adapter and restart, and re-install the new drivers. You can even try installing Force ware drivers, for some reason I tried the latest x64-bit and the nvlddmkm.sys error popped up after 30 min of game play which was an improvement.

Now I have purchased an aftermarket cooler for my GTX, therefore, I hope that this might help the issue but I doubt. I will post with updates soon.

Hey guys, I am reading this thread for a while now (not everything) and was wondering if anyone had exactly the same problem.
Couple of days ago I played Civ4 on my Laptop and suddenly screen went off(black), seconds later different colours and then nothing happened. I had to restart. EVER since that problem I couldnt get into Windows Vista. Everytime the Laptop booted, right before Windos Vista the screen had different colours again and then nothing.
I decided to reinstall Windows Vista, didnt work. Then I decided to format all hard drive, reinstall WinVista again, didnt work. Finally decided to install WinXp, didnt work. Used only one RAM (as recommended here in the beginning of the thread), didnt work neither. I couldn´t get into any Windows except in safe mode. Installing different drivers didnt work.
Then yesterday I came up with another idea, installing all drivers from a CD which were used when I bought the laptop. THAT in fact did work, and there the usual message came up as soon as I started Windows(nvlddmkm.sys has stopped responding and has recovered). I started to read about the problem and so on. My Laptop was running as before...I thought. As soon as I wanted to play NBA 2k9 on it. The same thing as in Civ4 happened again. And now I am stuck with the same problem again. The method I used yesterday (installing old drivers for everything) didnt work again, and now I was able to solve it by installing a "Standart VGA Driver". But with that I cant do a thing, except Internet. I cant play games lol.Sry thats all I do except for studying.

So I was wondering if anyone had a solution or possible solution for my problem? That would really be great. Thx!

And another thing is, everytime I try a possible solution and it doesnt work, the only way I can get into Windows again, is by reinstalling WinVista with "Standart VGA Driver", and that takes like 30-60mins everytime. Just to let yall know...

My system:

Intel(R) Centrino(TM) Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2Ghz
2 GB RAM
GeForce 8600M GS
WinVista Home Premium 32bit

I got my 9800gtx+ card back yesterday from RMA because i have the nvlddmkm crash. I put the card back in to see if the RMA fixed it and it did not. =(

tried all the above soulz9...

now i got a new 500gig HDD... installed win xp 32bit.... 163.xx drivers... all my game DVDs were with frnds as my system cud play nothing more than solitaire :p

exchanged my gta3 and blic 2007 dvds with my frndz nfs UC dvd :)

started playing.... first cutscene and the screen freezes :D

ok.. then i removed 1 GB RAM stick.... still freeze. now i removed the vid card and ran with on-board card and no freeze at al!! sadly the game frame rate was disgusting!

so finally... heat sink, extra cooling.. drivers from 163.xx to 181.xx... nothing works... not even underclocking by 70%!!!

but on-board card works!! so verdict - fried GPU on my 8600GT ??? then i need to try it on another PC.

i'm doooooomed!

OMG! Its the 116 error code

Everyone is having problems with this !

I've just built this system and...
I've got the 116 error code and a reboot.

I've tried everything I can think of. I'm gonna RMA my card :(

I can't find a solution.

HELP ME, PLEASE !!

(Here are my specs)

That problem happens with me when i play Left 4 dead.... what i have noticed is that my graphics tend to Artifact on and off...... my temps shoot up to 103deg...... thats pretty hot..... heres the mini dump decoded..

Hey Jen... followed your instructions to the letter, and now have successful install on each O/S (two XP-Pro; 1 x Vista Ult 32-bit; 1 x Vista Ult 64-bit)

You're a Doll!

Fritzman...good to hear. Took me some finger power typing it all out but well worth it after hearing your reply. Remember that not all ur games will work but the vast majority will. Count 14 people who have had success with the custom method so gonna keep close tabs and then edit the first post with this method.

Peeps...if u are having problems with the NVL and guide method is simply not happening...send me a PM with ur nv* folder names under File repo folder in system32. I will then reply with ur customized instructions specific to ur PC and the info u give me (might take time responding but I always reply)

So i have been following this thread and many others, attempting to find a fix for NVL.

My system specs are posted below, i have followed your post back on page one from 2007 and got that far. How ever i ran in to an issue with part of the nv cp not being installed. So i tried to reinstall but couldnt, the install app would not modify my system. Try as i might i am at a stand still. I have been fighting this for a month.

I really want to get my "gaming" rig back up and running. My guild in wow is waiting on me.

Thank fully for my poor old slow laptop i still have connectivity to the world.

If any one has any ideas on what to do next it would be a great help. I have reinstalled vista 64 just now. Going to see if i get the error again.

That indeed is an awesome gaming config!! 1000W power with SLI still has the error ??

OMG!! So what am I doing here!! I'm getting the damn error/artifacts even with WinXP. Tried everything mentioned on this thread more than twice!!

i've had to completely reinstall all my softwares & MSoffice atleast 12-15 times in the past 3 months!!

Interestingly, i've purchased NFS undercover (i know i did a big blunder!) and the system freezes in the first cut-scene!

Sometimes, it freezes while playing movies as well!!

Damn.. i doubt even if i change my motherboard and processor, it might not help! my system is haunted :bang head

AMD AM2 4GHz Dual core, ASUS M2N MXSE, 2GB 667MHz TRANSCEND, XFX GeForce 8600GT 512MB, 500GB WD SATA primary + 300GB SAMSUNG SATA, WIN XP PRO 32bit

full access to sys files w/o cmd patch

Vista32, PSU: 650W, SCSI Raid, E6600, Asus P5N-T Deluxe (nVidia chip), 3mons+TV on 2x 7900GTX, 1(now) stick 2GB PC2-6400 unlincked @ 800Mhz, overclock: FSB 1066-->1333 so CPU freq 2.4-->3.0GHz. UAC off, admin access rights.

- like others had all that nvlddmkm.sys crap for years from time to time.
usually after installing "new" drivers w/o FULL DELETING olds
- Like mentioned the only way that really works is deleting nv*.* files TOTALLY BY HAND. That means you need full access to sys. folders and files. For those who don't want / don't know how to use CMD there is a registry patch that allows you to change permission to full access right from Explorer. So you go to Windows/System32 --> search nv*.* --> get full access --> delete. The patch name is NoSecurity.reg if you want to search the WEB, or get it here www.dymber.com/nosecurity.html

warning: if you are on nVidia chipset(like me) deleting all nv* will delete all mobo drivers - not a big deal if you have Vista distributive - if OS does not load insert CD and choose startup restore - it will install default drivers. Otherwise delete only nv* video driver files (you can find the list in Control panel -> System -> Device manager -> right_click your display adapter -> Properties -> Driver -> Driver details)

If after the cleaning you can not install new drivers (setup starts, drivers unzip in to C:\Nvidia\, installation runs and finishes with the message "reboot..." but nothing changes after the reboot /you have VGA adapter or even nothing under the device manager ) in this situation reboot in Safe Mode go to Device Manager -> uninstall current video adapter (VGA adapter?) -> click "search for hardvare changes" -> see if your GeForce appears in the list. reboot to normal mode, ignore message about "found new hardware" go to Devise Manager -> your adapter -> change driver -> manually point to path c:\nvidia\

And, YES, combination Vista32 & NVidia dont like too much memory / too many sticks. My current problems began when I put 6GB in 4 slots to try to install Vista x64. but distr. was coppupted, my FSX HD reformatted so I can not try how it works in games. everything else seems OK. (I could not start ANY video with 6GB installed (I know it is stupid on x86 but I thought unused memory is just ignored - Nope - I had to remove 3 sticks and after that have no problem, ok almost, sometime screen goes black for a sec. when video mode changes but no BSOD no annoying messages)

Want to try x64 to see if I will be able to use >2GB otherwise it's like you buy car and you can not shift to 1st speed (it's TOOOOO powerful) or to 6th speed (No, No, it's tooooo fast) same concerns to advices like "lower/underclock everything" OK, lets buy 486 with VESA video and 1MB mem.

Hello everyone, I just registered to post this reply since I have been following this thread for quite some time now and finally fixed the machine's spirit :)

I have a striker 2 extreme mobo which is quite difficult to set up and have a stable system. The damn thing wouldn't work with any timings in my RAM. The PC used to crash all the time until after a long time I got it to work(stable) with some custom timings and a bit of overvoltage. At the time I was using BIOS 1002.

As with everyone else I couldn't get any games to play, the notorious nvlddmkm error was killing me. I could run other 3D intensive applications like 3DS max and MUDBOX but no games.

So the solution came from upgrading the BIOS to 1401. Placed everything on auto detect and the system is stable and no more nvlddmkm errors. Well, these settings however downclock my RAM a bit and overclock my CPU (go figure) but at least the system is running without any problems.

In this thread I saw a few posts about this being a RAM issue, I don't know what it may be but I'm telling you this so that people with knowledge can get their heads around it. I had the problem under Vista 64 and in XP 64 it simply used to crash. Now everything works.

kurkubelos...(sic name)...I've had very little luck with the striker mobos. Will pass on ur post to the striker mobo crew. So an underclocked system works fine...I can understand just being happy to have a stable system (I have a t-shirt collection based on this) but once I got my system stable...it was not enough...I wanted full power...then wanted to OC...even then @ 4.4Ghz I was still not happy...still cannot not play Halo 2 (not that I want to play it...I just want it work...for once...on my PC)...EndOfRant (I have issues...a lot of them;-)

Jen....after trying your fix where you change ACL permissions i seem to now be having problems installing drivers. i am getting permission denied for instance while installing my monitor drivers. Does the changes done in your procedure require reversal after completed?
