Wow, I am a bit amazed. I just bought my spanking new pc about a month ago. I have been STRUGGLING to get ahold of any kind of customer support at newegg, cyber power, or nvidia with no luck what so ever. I've tried like hell to fix this on my own, naturally i'm pretty ticked off that almost EVERYONE tries to tell you to "reinstall" your drivers, or to change slots on your mother board.

So basically you're telling me that there is a group of people that have been trying to fix this problem since 2007, and you have STILL had no help from Nvidia, or microsoft, or someone? so for over 2 years they have been just selling these cards and equipment as the "BEST" for gaming.... and they can't even play stinkin pacman? I dont know about any one else but I can't play ANYTHING. without it messing up. If i put my pc to sleep and come back i have 10 errors waiting on me.

I have been using computers since my Commadore 64. More recently with XP I've had a dell, a vaio, a toshiba laptop, and a compaq laptop, and though they have all had problems, especially the toshiba. they ALL performed, and none of them anything this ridiculous.

I guess if you all are still workin on this, then I'll try and help, but i can't beleiver that in alll the tests and reviews I read before buying, and i read over a hundred, NO one referred to this problem, the only people who really seem to acknowledge it are thousands of people in forums...

Sounds a bit like something out of a horror movie doesn't it, but Welcome to the Forums anyways...

JenBell (and her fine, very highly paid team) appear to have worked the best solution... you'll find it posted here and there through the thread... if followed to the letter, my experience (and that of many others here) is... it works!

So I was planning to edit the first post but I'll put a version here first (really short on time...some of you might have seen this if u've PM'ed me before)

Its not fully fleshed out for the beginners but I will get it done...eventually...this is so not the right day to be typing this out...so lets begin.

Note: If you are unsure or simply want your own customised version of what is written below - specific to your PC...then please send me screencaptures of your File repo folder showing all the nv folders via PM.

1. So I want you to uninstall your nvidia drivers and reboot
2. Delete your temp folder…easy thing to do is to download ccleaner (google for it) its freeware and run it and clean out ur system of older files, etc
3. Delete the nvidia folder under C: drive
4. Go to the file repo folder (will add complete path later)
5. Delete nv_* folders. DO NOT DELETE THE nv4_disp folder
7. Now go into the nv4_disp.inf*. You will see the last remaining NVL on your PC. When you use the expand method to get the file, this is where you copy it.
8. Now empty ur recycle bin if u’ve not done it yet
9. Reboot
10. Install NV drivers. Use expand method to get hold of the NVL file from the C:\nvidia folder
11. If you have not installed the registry hack to take ownership of files, do that now…post to that link: http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=5926997&postcount=353
12. Install nv drivers now – don’t reboot at the end – this is very important…don’t restart until I say so
13. Now I want you copy the NVL file expanded file to the folder to nv4_disp.inf_*
14. You might get an error when u try this…if u do then simply right-click and take ownership and copy NVL via copy/replace option
15. OK so now look at the file repo folder . Do you see any other folder with nv_*.inf in the name? If you do, go inside and past in ur NVL file
16. Now I want you to past a copy of the NVL file to the following places as well
17. C:\windows\
18. C:\windows\systems32
19. C:\windows\systems32\drivers
20. Reboot now
21. Check things…see how it goes…note…try multiple games and see what crashes and what does not…for example..I for the life of me cannot play Halo 2 no matter what I do but pretty much EVERYTHING else including crysis, HL2, CSS, FarCry2, Fallout3 all play fine

Yet another user PLAGUED by the nvlddmkm.sys problem.

I have an HP m8530F computer - Quad Core 2.2 AMD Vista 64
I changed out the video card to a PNY 1G 9800GX2
I changed the power source to a LSP ULTRA 750W ATX Power Supply

I have been following this thread and doing everything I possibly can to try to rid myself of this damn crash, but to no avail. I first noticed it while playing warhammer in november. I stopped playing that game and the crashes were few and far between.

Now, I am playing Darkfall online and I can get 5 minutes into the game when it crashes.

I have riva tuner installed, but I do not know how to check video card temperatures or GPU temperatures.

I use CCleaner and Disk Sweeper between every video driver swap I do (in safe mode).

Whenever I do a driver swap I delete ALL the nvlddmkm.sys files from my computer. ALL of them, every single one I can find. After installing the next set of drivers I go to the cmd prompt and "expand.exe nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys" and paste that nvl file into the C:/windows, C:/windows/system32, and C:/windows/system32/drivers directories.

The drivers I am trying to use are the latest nvidia drivers (182.50) and the beta drivers (185.68). both drivers I downloded from nvidia.com homepage.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide. I am terribly ****ed off that I spent $50 on a game and the free month is being wasted away due to a 2 YEAR OLD PROBLEM with no easy solution. If this continues either I am going to windows XP or to ATI for another video card. Thanks for ANY help provided :D

**EDIT**
Found out how to monitor GPU temps and voltages through Riva Tuner. So far, both GPUs on the 9800 are running at 64 degrees C, supply voltage is 3.4V. Dont seem to have an option for core temperature atm though.

Played the game in windowed mode for 10 minutes. Temeprature of GPU1 reached 78 degrees C and the BSOD happened. GPU2 was at 74 degrees C.
Played Darkfall again. This time I played for 20 minutes (slight improvement). GPU1 reached 81 degrees before the BSOD and GPU2 was 76 degrees C.

hmm....

Ok I got a little lost on these if you dont mind helping me out

I cant find any File repo folders, and my search doenst bring either up.
I dont know what you mean by NV folders, I have an Nvidia folder with the winvista64 in it that has the 182... somethin driver folder in it.
and I cant find any nv4 files. so im lost there to... :(

Another use with the same problem i think.

Hello all,

I just got my pc a week ago. I am playing Crysis and all of the sudden the screen goes black but i still hear sounds. it then goes to the blue screen of death, reboots and says my nivida driver stopped working or it says nvlddmkm.sys has stopped responding and has recovered. I am not that good on pcs so i am not sure how to do the suggest fix above. Any help would be great. AT First i though it was a bad graphics card and now i see more people have that problem.

my pc is:
windows vista ulimtae 64bit
intel 1.7 2.66ghz
patriot viper series tri channel dd R3 pc3-12800 6gb 1600mhz low latency dimm
BFG gtx 285 OCX
gigabytet ga-ex58- ds4
corsair TX series CMPSU-850TX 850 W

Tahnks :)

I was having the same problem on my son's pc, specs are e7300, ep45-ud3r, 8800gtx, 4 gig ocz ram and vista ultimate 64 bit.

I tryed every damn thing and couldn't come up with a solution, so after staying up all night, I finally formatted and put XP back on the machine.:bang head:bang head:bang head

JenBell, do u have a solution for my case ?? You had send me a PM for troubleshooting in vista.. but i dont use vista anymore.... all that money spent has gone to trash! :O

To refresh my post.

unlike earlier when i had vista ultimate and xp and i used to get the NVL error on vista, Like i mentioned i am using ONLY Win Xp pro now and i still am not able to get the system working... been at it since my last post here... so been running only xp since 4-5 months and i still cant play any darn game! even some movies just freeze... why.. all of a sudden even the desktop just freezes!

btw i have an M2N MXSE mother board and using 2x1gig 667MHz DDR2 RAM sticks.. i've tried running with single stick in slot and all sorts of combinations.. no use. the manufacturer website says this board has standard 800MHz RAM...

btw.. when i remove my 8600GT card, with the on-board card, system is absolutely fine even when i had vista! but the card is disgustingly poor in handling even medium graphics games! :(

help me JenBell! :(

buzz...u have no idea how 'intense' Halo2 is until u play it for all of three seconds then go back to CSS to recover^_^

The full path to the filerepo folder is:
C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

Clone...Can u please PM me a list of your folders under C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository. Interested in folders starting with the letter 'n'. I then write in up instructions specific to ur PC - it makes it so much easier when I can specify specific folder and say in minute detail exactly what needs to be done.

Nut...back to XP...nooooo...I can understand but XP is so netbook (just repeating what someone PMed me;-)

Bruce...back to XP...er...OK. I am kind of clueless on XP at the moment. Using Win7/vista32 and OSX mainly at the mo. One of my employees is actually quite sic and can make the NVL appear on his MSI Wind...and its does not even use nvidia GPU

Peeps...keep repeating this but I really do think you should take note. Simply go to the C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and printscreen or write down all the folders. PM me this list of folders and I'll get back to u on how to sort out ur PC...just ur's.

Bwt...spent an entire day playing CSS with a client before they signed the contract...afterwards they told me that they agreed because I must been a proper geek to be better than them on office...sexist gits(T_T). I can say that 99% percent of Korean men I have come across are just lost in every sense of the word.

Hi

I started having this problem a week ago, to the point where I can only occaisionally get into windows normally, it crashes most of the time and I have to start in safe mode.

Please bear in mind that while I am not pc illiterate I know next to nothing about how they work. I am one of those people that can use programs that are on a pc and can install games etc. but thats it, which is why I spent so much money on a pre built pc :screwy:

PC spec:
Dell XPS 720 H2C

QX6800 Extreme 2.93GHz 1066Mhz 8MB Cache
Dual 768MB NVidia GeForce 8800GTX
Hard Drive 320GB Serial ATA Raid 0 Stripe (2x160) (10000 Rpm)
Vista Ultimate 32bit

I have spoken to Dell Hardware who have replaced my drivers and then spoken to Dell software who did the same and now want to research the problem and phone me back in 4 days time!!! obviously niether can get it working at this point in time.

I have read through a lot of pages on this thread and frankly I am completely lost. It seems there is a solution but it doesn't work for everyone or every game, is this correct? I have also looked at the solutions but don't understand everything in them.

Does re-installing the operating system work and or starting the pc from new work? As this may be Dell's next option with me and frankly it scares me a little, in that I have to get everything back up and running!!!

Would buying new graphics cards work?

Obviously I don't want to spend money unless I really have to. Dell software will also charge me if they fix the problem, my warranty is hardware only :(

Any help in a form suitable for a pc idiot would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I reinstalled vista twice on my sons pc and still the damn error, I'd be willing to bet though, replacing the video card would fix my problems.:bang head:mad:

Had to sign up to get in on this crazy thread. I also have been having the nvlddmkm.sys stopped responding error. My only problem is I have ONLY had it about one month, my system ran great for over a year! I have no idea "why" my system won't run now when it once did but after trying so many things I am starting to suspect something has gone south in my system. Especially when I rolled back to old drivers on a fresh install of vista.

Today I ordered a new PSU, since I noticed my current PSU fan sounded like its having problems. I am thinking that MAYBE my power is not stable and is causing something to hang. I can run windows and browse the internet fine, it is only when playing games. So maybe the video cards or something starts drawing more power and then it crashes. Who knows but I will be replacing each part from this point on and will report what happens.

Hey Jen,

I have been trying all the fixes you have mentioned in this very long 2 year post, and everything has been running smoothly... well until the new drivers and new game. I currently installed the 182.50 drivers from nVidia, and started playing Last Remnant. No matter what I do, or when I try and play, within 5-10 minutes I get the crash, and blue screen O death. All my other games, WoW, L4D, Fallout 3 all run flawlessly, except this one! Any help would be fantastic.
I currently only have 1 "nv_" folder other than the nv4 one, so really not sure what the problem is! Ill try one more time with your method and maybe that will work! Thanks again for all the help, not just with me but everyone else who is having this problem!

Jen Bell.... since i cant seem to even run games/movies on XP due to the NVL error, i have removed the 8600GT card.. now just the on-board card serving to keep the system stable.. so that i could at least run downloads and at times play prehistoric games like commandos- men of courage etc etc... anything more than that and the 6150 card struggles to handle!

Am contemplating switching to a new motherboard with a better on-board graphics card and power supply upgrade from 400W to 600W. as of now planning to keep the AMD X2 4GHz dual core processor + 2 x 667MHz 1GB RAM.

Any recommendations for a decent mobo to accomodate above processor for under 150$ ???

Bruce...u went back to OBmobo...that must hurt...mentally more than anything.

Honestly, not the best person to ask right now about amd mobo's. I'd defo read something like custom pc though...but know the intel and x86 server side of things pretty well (thank u for making me feel useless...not blaming u though...yet)...and Sun is that rocks u boat as well (am I the only woman who gets turned on by v890s?)

Bruce...u went back to OBmobo...that must hurt...mentally more than anything.

yep.. real bad! Now i happen to read an article on SMPS... i din know that the power output of the SMPS module deteriorates over a period of time! i am not quite sure if its a good brand. Its definitely not Corsair or coolermaster :p

So which means, there cud be a chance that when my system had only 1x80GB IDE + 8600GT, the power usage was not so high from the 400W unit.. later addition of 300GB SATA meant, the usage went a bit higher... all was fine for a year almost and suddenly NVL appeared.. used to happen when playing games (on xp or vista)... for some time underclocking GPU helped.. but funny thing is, even without underclocking NFS-Carbon played like a dream!!!

So i feel, usually these SMPS units deliver less than spec power.. so maybe it was giving say 320W initially and over some time, it fell to much less... now an addition of a 500GB SATA + 2xDVD writers might be killing it!

So i'm going for a 700W unit right away ;)

SP2 update...

just registered so i could post that SP2 was no help. well, it was stable for longer and i was able to play for longer periods of time, but in the end, the inevitable crash, sometimes with recovery; sometimes to BS... oh, and Win7... same thing... same crash to desktop or BS... i have an image of my last XP, but it was kinda getting hosed... don't want to start over... :/
