Foopsz, I suggest you save some more money and wait until you can get both a good CPU and a good motherboard. If you get a poor motherboard you will regret it. It would be like building a sky scraper onto a chicken coup foundation. You will have just thrown your money away and will have to start over again with the motherboard.

+1

You can get the X 4 975 for that same price as the 965 but OEM, i.e., without cooler.

Yes but IMHO a $100 Motherboard (which we know to be a good one) for $65, and the HAF case with a good CPU with in his budget is to good to pass.

Granted the 960 might not overclock as high as the 975 but once he gets a $30 cooler on it at a later date 3.8Ghz is very doable.

Compromises for a tight budget :) Or perhaps he can find a 975 box edition somewhere els for $120 ?

Open box Asus M5A97, $65 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767R

AMD Phenom II X4 965, $120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727

CM HAF 912, $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233&Tpk=haf 912

That comes to $245, go get it before that MOBO disappears :)

You can get a better cooler for overclocking at a later date.

Hopefully i buy that Mobo in a week and get the rest in july some time! But thanks right around my price range!

Me and my grandpa are suppose to trade because he wants a multimedia case like mine so i asked him to buy me a HAF so i will be getting some type of case with alot of air flow knowing my grandpa so if the mobo open box is still there when i go to buy everything i will be getting the mobo and maybe.
6-Core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx? Item=N82E16819103962

or this 4-core Processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106009

Cant Decide to go with more cores or do the 4 core i believe the 4 core is alot better

Likewise, AMD's Piledriver based AM3+ chips are just around the corner. Give's a healthy IPC boost, drop in power use and apparently better scaling to higher clock frequencies. Being AMD, expect the pricing to be unrealistically high at release time, and then to slide downwards to lower than the price of the equivalent Intel part. So long as you stick with FX parts they're all clock unlocked too.

Oh yes, but... we are probably not going to see the FX Piledriver parts until very late this year if we are lucky. spring next year is probably more realistic.

But at least that Asus M5A97 Motherboard is good for it :)

Yes, but we're over half way through the year already. If he's going to wait to save up some more, then he may as well wait a bit longer for AMD to become more competitive than they are right now. This will mean lower prices from both AMD and Intel, irrespective of which way he decides to go. ;)

i am waiting till July 19 to buy all my stuff so not that long also what one should i choose out of those two?

I believe the best choice if you're looking at AMD right now is the FX8120, its unlocked and will overclock very nicely so long as you have a decent cooler. On the other hand, an Intel Core i5 2500K is a little faster in most things when benchmarked, and will also overclock very nicely. Once you go higher up the Intel range AMD really doesn't have anything that competes.

While AMD generally works out cheap for chip + mainboard, it's also important to remember that their current chips generate a fair bit of heat when overclocked so you have to factor in the price of a high end cooler like this one. With a i5 2500K they run somewhat cooler and this cooler would be sufficient for overclocking to the same performance levels as the overclocked AMD chip.

Basically, when comparing whats better value overclocked, you have to factor in CPU + mainboard + heatsink cost.

all those are about 250 Max price.

The Phenom II x4 965 is better than the FX4100, and i would say the FX-4170.

The FX-8120 is better than the Phenom II 965

The Motherboard is perfect, the case is also perfect.

The COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 is a good cooler 'but' the slightly more expensive Hyper 212 EVO is better as it has a much better CPU contact plate and you will find the one on the 212 Plus tricky.

All of that though is binned if you get the FX-8120 as it will turn that cooler into a puddle of molten copper and alloy in the bottom of your nice HAF 912 case. :) <- not litraly, but its not that good for it.

if i get the 8120 i would have to find a slighty cheaper mobo.

and that fan is 5 dollars when i use the rebate card plus 5 dollars off.

As stated by others,- be careful about Motherboards on an FX 8 core. if you end up with a cheap and nasty one the FX may boil it to deaf in a matter of months.

There is just no easy way to get high end gear for little money, performance and quality costs. That MOBO is good quality and as cheap as you can get for that quality even at full price, if it was not you would not see 3 people in this thread all with the same Motherboard.

But at the end of the day it is your choice we are here to help and advise you, beyond that its all your show :)

Does it? I have not seen this in a while. (Im not an AMD basher, both my rigs are AMD)

*cry I said both and not 4 or 5 :(

Despite the fact that AMD already told its partners that Vishera powered Volan platform is coming in 2012, many are preparing to launch of Bulldozer desktop successors in early 2013. They learned the lesson with Bulldozer that was delayed for many quarters; let’s not say years. It is better be skeptical than sorry.
Q3 launch usually means back to school season.

Anywho, yeah im all on AMD for price/performance. that octo core at under $170 is a sweet deal UNLESS what you said is true. Have any facts to verify it? (I am not trying to be a buzkill asking cuz I want to know!!!)

PS: I got my thuban for super cheap right before Bulldozer launched. That is in my main rig :)

At OP. Depending on verification from MJW about PD being RIGHT around the corner (IE right means 2 weeks not back to school season, not Christmas launch...) I would stick with the octo BD for now with teh refurb/open box buy on the ASUS board. If you can swing an extra $20 you can get slightly better parts. If $250 is your absolute max, I suggest looking for a used/refurb board that is still under warranty for a bit. thats a good deal on the CPU, the worst of the 4core BD chips are a hundred and the thuban/zosma chips are going to run you close to that now anyway since they are no longer produced.

If you can actually wait till back to school season or Christmas, then you should. Launch of new products = lower prices of old products.

Only way to get a good deal on those AMDs is to hit up forum FS sections or better yet Ebay because someone doesn't know what they have is valuable and is selling it cheap.

As for Intel for gaming. Not an issue unless you are using a $200 GPU on a $20 monitor. :)

Look we need to face reality here. Frakk has touched on it but he did not make it 'perfectly' clear about the heat. Neither of the CM 212 series can handle an 8 core FX overclocked. Not a snowballs chance in SanAntonio. It takes a pretty good overclock to make an FX more powerful in work than a thuban which AMD purposely removed from sales to force the FX on peeps is my guess.

At this juncture without the benefits supposed to come with PileDriver...the 2500K is the better deal if still available.

I did not read the whole post again, but I think I posted about him getting a FX-4170 because they seem more able to get to 4.5Ghz than any of the other FX processors without so dang much heat. That speed is necessary for performance.
